Jane Potter, M.D.,<\/b> chief of geriatrics and gerontology, has been selected as one of four national judges in the Salute to Senior Service program sponsored by Home Instead, Inc., the franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care network. The program honors the contributions of adults 65 and older who give at least 15 hours a month of volunteer service to their favorite causes.<\/p>\n

Geoffrey A. Talmon, M.D., <\/b>an associate professor of pathology\/microbiology, was awarded a Golden Apple Award by the M2 class.<\/p>\n

\n<\/TABLE>The Golden Apple Award is presented to a faculty member with the largest number of student nominations. The classes also award a Silver Pear award to another outstanding faculty member. This year, the medical students also revived an award for the best section of clinical medical education; this award has now been awarded since 2001. <\/p>\n

These awards are all nominated solely by students in the M2 class and presented by students.

    \nMcDonald, Ph.D.,<\/b> and Geoffrey Thiele, Ph.D.,<\/b> section directors\n<\/ul>\n

    Paul G. Tomich, M.D., <\/b>professor and director of the division of maternal-fetal medicine at UNMC and medical director of obstetrics at The Nebraska Medical Center, has been elected Fellow-at-Large of The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). He officially assumed the office Thursday. Dr. Tomich has previously served as ACOG assistant secretary.<\/p>\n

    Jonathan Thompson, M.D.,<\/b> a fourth-year UNMC surgery resident, received an Excellence in Research Award from the American College of Surgeons in the category of vascular surgery. Dr. Thompson was one of 15 authors identified for the award, which will be given at the 2013 Surgical Forum in October and includes an $800 stipend. Dr. Thompson’s article was titled, “Mortality Rates of Patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease Are Predicted by the Respiratory Activities of Gastrocnemius Mitochondrial Complexes I and IV.”<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
