{"id":43365,"date":"2013-05-13T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-05-13T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2013\/05\/13\/unmc-brings-gross-anatomy-to-kearney\/"},"modified":"2013-05-13T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2013-05-13T05:00:00","slug":"unmc-brings-gross-anatomy-to-kearney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2013\/05\/13\/unmc-brings-gross-anatomy-to-kearney\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC brings gross anatomy to Kearney"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>\n<strong><em>Physician assistants receive cadaver training to enhance life-saving skills<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nA group of seven UNMC faculty went to the University of Nebraska at Kearney on April 11 and brought three lightly-embalmed human cadavers with them. The group used the cadavers to teach emergency life-saving skills to 20 physician assistants from rural Nebraska communities.<\/p>\n<p>\nUsing the cadavers and a mannequin patient, the UNMC instructors taught a variety of emergency procedures such as how to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nPut in a central line;<\/li>\n<li>\nInsert a chest tube; and<\/li>\n<li>\nPerform a lumbar puncture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nThe lightly-embalmed cadavers have better texture and elasticity and more realistic color than normal cadavers and provided the participants with a more real-life setting for learning and performing the procedures.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe physician assistants were all members of the Nebraska Association of Physician Assistants (NAPA).<\/p>\n<p>\nThe UNMC faculty included three physician assistants, two emergency medicine physicians and two gross anatomy instructors. Participants included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<strong>Darwin Brown,<\/strong> physician assistant;<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Michael Wadman, M.D.,<\/strong> emergency medicine physician;<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Wes Zeger, D.O.,<\/strong> emergency medicine physician;<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Sarah Keim Janssen, Ph.D.,<\/strong> gross anatomy instructor;<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Tamara Ritsema,<\/strong> physician assistant;<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Stephane VanderMeulen,<\/strong> physician assistant; and<\/li>\n<li>\n<strong>Carol Lomneth, Ph.D.,<\/strong> gross anatomy
