{"id":43648,"date":"2013-06-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-14T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2013\/06\/14\/aug-14-breastfeeding-conference-to-feature-two-national-experts\/"},"modified":"2022-08-22T16:24:55","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T21:24:55","slug":"aug-14-breastfeeding-conference-to-feature-two-national-experts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2013\/06\/14\/aug-14-breastfeeding-conference-to-feature-two-national-experts\/","title":{"rendered":"Aug. 14 Breastfeeding Conference to feature two national experts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>\nRegistration is now open for the Breastfeeding: Baby&rsquo;s Natural Choice Conference, which will be held on Aug. 14 at the La Vista Conference Center, 12520 Westport Parkway (off Interstate 80, Giles Road exit &ndash; exit 442).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\nKeynote speakers include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilactation.com\/about-us\/past-conferences\/breastfeeding-a-great-start\/\">Christina Smillie, M.D.,<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ask.com\/wiki\/Diana_West_%28lactation_consultant%29?o=2800&amp;qsrc=999\">Diana West<\/a>, both nationally prominent spokeswomen on the subject of breastfeeding and international board certified lactation consultants.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;The data regarding the advantages of breastfeeding are unambiguous,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/obgyn\/smith_carl.htm\">Carl Smith, M.D.,<\/a> chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/obgyn\/index.htm\">Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology<\/a>.&nbsp;&ldquo;Breast milk is truly the perfect food for newborns.&nbsp;The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olsoncenter.com\/home\/\">Olson Center for Women&rsquo;s Health<\/a> is proud to sponsor this important conference for health professionals. The speakers are superb and nationally known for their work in breastfeeding.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\nPhysicians, nurses, lactation consultants, registered dietitians, residents, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, breastfeeding advocates, social workers and students are invited to the one-day conference, which will be held from 7:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch and snacks will be provided.<\/p>\n<p>\nMore than 400 participants are expected to attend the conference.<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Smillie will present her expert approach and understanding of baby-led breastfeeding and how arbitrary breastfeeding &ldquo;rules&rdquo; and expectations can interfere with what the baby already knows.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;Omaha and the Midwest are fortunate to have this conference,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrensomaha.org\/HealthyNutritionforToddlers-LauraWilwerdingMD\">Laura Wilwerding, M.D.,<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/nebreastfeeding.org\/\">Nebraska Breastfeeding Coalition<\/a> leader and Omaha pediatrician<\/p>\n<p>\nNow in its 10<sup>th<\/sup> year, the biannual conference offers a variety of continuing education credits for health care professionals.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe conference is sponsored by the Olson Center for Women&#039;s Health and the University of Nebraska Medical Center in cooperation with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/nursing\/\">UNMC College of Nursing<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/cce\/\">UNMC Center for Continuing Education<\/a>.
