Andrew Baumgartner, an fourth-year medical student at UNMC, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program<\/a> scholarship to the Netherlands in Philosophy.<\/p>\n

Baumgartner is one of more than 1,700 U.S. citizens who will travel abroad for the 2013-2014 academic year through the Fulbright program. Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential.<\/p>\n

“I am curious about what shapes medical practice — scientific research, legislation, history, ethics, technology, etc.,” Baumgartner said. “I didn’t have much time to explore these during the first three years of medical school, so I pursued a Fulbright grant.”<\/p>\n

During his 10 months in the Netherlands, Baumgartner said he would study Dutch elderly care medicine, “hoping to mine insights that can be imported to our American health care context.” <\/p>\n

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.<\/p>\n
