There are steps you can take to make your house more energy efficient, including:<\/p>\n<p><b>Install storm doors and windows,<\/b> making sure they close securely.<\/p>\n<p><b>Remove window A\/C units.<\/b>  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you leave a window unit in place, put a cover on it and seal the edges to the window frame.<\/ul>\n<p><TABLE border=\"0\" width=\"260\" cellspacing=\"5\" cellpadding=\"3\" align=\"right\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><br \/>\n<TABLE border=\"1\" width=\"250\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"5\" bgcolor=\"99ccff\"><br \/>\n<TR><br \/>\n<TD><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\"><br \/>\n<B><br \/>\nIf you&#8217;re hardcore:<br \/>\n<\/B><br \/>\n<BR><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">\n<font face=\"arial\" size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<b>Plastic window insulation<\/b> adds another buffer against the cold, and the additional still air space helps your home hold heat.<\/p>\n<p><b>Add more insulation.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add insulation to your walls and attic.\n<li>Insulate your pipes and hot water heater if they are warm to the touch.\n<li>Insulate the basement rim joist that separates the frame of your house from the foundation.\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Use a programmable thermostat.<\/b>  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turn the heat down to 65\u00b0 F when you leave the house and when you sleep.\n<li>Put on an extra layer of clothes and set your thermostat as low as you comfortably can when you&#8217;re home.<\/ul>\n<p><b>Run ceiling fans clockwise<\/b> to circulate warmer air down into the living space.<\/p>\n<p><b>Turn down the water heater.<\/b> Lowering the temperature to 120\u00b0 F can reduce your water heating costs six to 10 percent.<\/p>\n<p><\/P><br \/>\n<\/FONT><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE><br \/>\n<\/TD><br \/>\n<\/TR><br \/>\n<\/TABLE><br \/>\n<b>Locate air leaks.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plug all holes and caulk all gaps where different building materials meet &#8212; along the foundation and where chimneys, pipes and wires enter the home.\n<li>Light a stick of incense or a candle and move it around windows, doors and baseboards &#8212; where the smoke or flame wavers, you have a draft.\n<li>Close the damper on your fireplace when you&#8217;re not using it.\n<li>Check the access to your attic &#8212; caulk the frame where it meets the ceiling and place a gasket around the door.<\/ul>\n<p><b>Stop Drafts<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Weather strip windows\/exterior doors, adjust or replace door sweeps.\n<li>Put <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailygreen.com\/green-homes\/latest\/door-draft-stoppers-draft-snakes-460109#slide-1\">draft snakes<\/a> against doors and on window sills, or use rolled up towels.<\/ul>\n<p><b>Insulate electrical boxes<\/b> that house outlets and switches in exterior walls using pre-cut foam gaskets.  <\/p>\n<p><b>Have your heating system professionally tuned-up to keep it humming.<\/b> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clean or replace furnace filters once a month, vacuum dirt off the coils of the air conditioner.\n<li>Open and clean vents in rooms you use; close vents in unused rooms.\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Dirt streaks on your duct work indicate leaks.<\/b>  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fix them with tape approved for duct sealing. Look carefully; it&#8217;s not &#8220;duct tape.&#8221;\n<li>Call a professional if they&#8217;re very dirty or worn.<\/ul>\n<p><b>Drain hoses, sprinklers and exterior faucets.<\/b> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seal water leaks.\n<li>Shut off exterior faucets with an interior valve and drain the faucets.<\/ul>\n<p><b>Change the batteries<\/b> in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.<\/p>\n<p><b>Clean gutters<\/b> so leaf debris doesn&#8217;t cause ice dams on the roof.<\/p>\n<p><b>Check the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dsireusa.org\/incentives\/index.cfm?re=0&amp;ee=0&amp;spv=0&amp;st=0&amp;srp=1&amp;state=NE\">Database of State Incentives for Renewables &amp;
