\n43 register for National Bone Marrow Donor registry<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\nA parade of walkers wearing twinkling lights marched around Werner Park on the evening of Oct. 17 to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.<\/p>\n

\nThe Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center served as this year’s Platinum Sponsor for the Light the Night Walk. In total, the medical center team contributed $9,339, which will help fund therapies and treatment advances for blood cancer patients.<\/p>\n

\nSue Schreiner<\/strong>, fiscal outcomes and operations manager for The Nebraska Medical Center’s Cancer Service Line, was pleased with the turnout.<\/p>\n

\n“It was fun to see enterprise-wide participation,” said Schreiner, who served as the medical center’s Light the Night Walk team captain. “Working with our cancer population, I see the impact organizations like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society have on patients and their families. I am just happy so many came out to support our team.”<\/p>\n

\nThe Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center team was joined by Decreasing the Donor Deficit (DDD), a UNMC student organization.<\/p>\n

\nVolunteers assisted potential donors with DNA swabs and paperwork, which was then sent to Be the Match, the National Marrow Donor Program. Thanks to their efforts, 43 new people were added to the national registry.<\/p>\n

\n“I am thrilled to say we exceeded our registration goals,” said Ali McCabe<\/strong>, DDD president. “Light the Night Walk was a great opportunity for us to reach out to the community and spread the word about the importance of donor registration.”<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
