But what about decorating? What about the tree? What about the lights and the smells that make the holidays special?  <\/p>\n<p><b>Tree alternatives<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Decorate a tree in your yard for the birds: hang popcorn and cranberry garlands, suet, cookies, dried fruit, and pine cones rolled in peanut butter and seeds.\n<li>Decorate a potted plant, like a Norfolk Island pine, or hang ornaments on your ficus.\n<li>There is an on-going debate about the environmental cost of natural vs. artificial trees.  Click <a href=\"http:\/\/earth911.com\/news\/2010\/11\/29\/real-vs-artificial-christmas-trees\/\">here<\/a> to find out more.\n<li>Find decorations at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thethriftshopper.com\/city\/Omaha\/NE\/1.htm\">thrift stores.<\/a>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Cards: Reduce, reuse, recycle<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose cards with recycled content and avoid cards with plastic, shiny or gold foil coatings &#8212; these can&#8217;t be recycled.\n<li>Cut off the fronts of cards you received last year, write a message on the back and re-send.\n<li>Send <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.storyofstuff.org\/page\/share\/peace\">e-cards<\/a>.  For a wider selection, try <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hallmarkecards.com\/\">these<\/a>.\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Holiday scents<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Instead of burning chemically-scented candles, try soy or beeswax candles with essential oils.\n<li>Simmer some cinnamon on the stove &#8212; or bake gingerbread. (Yum!)<\/ul>\n<p><b>Holiday lights<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Light displays cheer us up, especially on gray winter days.  If lighting your home is part of your tradition, remember:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Smaller displays use less energy.\n<li>As your old light strings burn out, replace them with LED lights that use less electricity.\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.holidayleds.com\/holidayledscom_christmas_light_recycling_program\">Recycle your old lights<\/a> for a credit you can use to buy new LED lights.\n<li>Unplug your lights during the day and when you go to bed.\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Wrapping<\/b><\/p>\n<p>While wrapping the thrifted treasures for your loved ones:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reuse gift wrap, ribbons, bows, boxes, and gift bags from last year.\n<li>Give a double gift &#8212; put the gift in a reusable tote bag or wrap it in a scarf.\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Shopping (because let&#8217;s face it, we&#8217;re still going to shop)<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shop locally.\n<li>Consolidate shopping trips to save gas, or shop online.\n<li>BYOB &#8212; Bring your own bag to carry gifts, the way you do when buying
