{"id":45570,"date":"2014-01-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-27T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/01\/27\/science-of-bipolar-disorder-is-focus-of-feb-4-omaha-science-cafe\/"},"modified":"2022-08-22T16:27:44","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T21:27:44","slug":"science-of-bipolar-disorder-is-focus-of-feb-4-omaha-science-cafe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/01\/27\/science-of-bipolar-disorder-is-focus-of-feb-4-omaha-science-cafe\/","title":{"rendered":"Science of bipolar disorder is focus of Feb. 4 Omaha Science Cafe"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/psychiatry\/wengel.htm\">Steven Wengel, M.D.,<\/a> will discuss bipolar disorder at the next Omaha <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/sciencecafe.htm\">Science Caf&eacute;<\/a>, at 7 p.m., Feb. 4, at <a href=\"http:\/\/theslowdown.com\/index.cfm\">the Slowdown<\/a>, 729 N. 14<sup>th<\/sup> St. The event will mark the fifth anniversary of UNMC&rsquo;s Science Caf&eacute;.<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Wengel, a geriatric psychiatrist, is professor and chair of the department of psychiatry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>\nAn&nbsp;Omaha native and UNMC graduate, Dr. Wengel trained in the Creighton-Nebraska Psychiatry Residency Program and was the first geriatric psychiatry fellow in the state of Nebraska. He joined the UNMC faculty in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/index.shtml\">National Institute of Mental Health<\/a> calls bipolar disorder, or manic-depressive illness, a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Wengel will discuss symptoms, treatment and coping with the disorder.<\/p>\n<p>\nSlowdown manager Val Nelson said she wasn&rsquo;t expecting the Science Caf&eacute;s to prove so popular when she first partnered with UNMC five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;The key is always having an interesting topic,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;You&rsquo;re really seeing an expert in that field for free. You get to ask questions to an expert in a bar setting, which is completely different.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\nScience Cafe is a free educational event sponsored by UNMC and other groups to increase the population&rsquo;s science literacy. Hosted by UNMC and the <a href=\"http:\/\/nebraskacures.com\/\">Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures<\/a>, Science Cafes are held the first Tuesday of each month in Omaha and quarterly in Lincoln. They are open to everyone 21 and older.<\/p>\n<p>\nFree pizza, available for the first 50 people, will be provided by the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures.
