{"id":45586,"date":"2014-01-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-29T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/01\/29\/unmc-names-dr-caverzagie-associate-dean-for-educational-strategy\/"},"modified":"2022-08-22T16:27:38","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T21:27:38","slug":"unmc-names-dr-caverzagie-associate-dean-for-educational-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/01\/29\/unmc-names-dr-caverzagie-associate-dean-for-educational-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC names Dr. Caverzagie associate dean for educational strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/intmed\/gim\/bio.cfm?MyID=2707&amp;section=General%20Medicine-Academic\">Kelly Caverzagie, M.D.,<\/a> associate vice chair for quality and physician competence in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/\">University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/intmed\/\">Department of Internal Medicine<\/a>, has been appointed associate dean for educational strategy for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/com\/\">College of Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe newly created position was announced today by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/intmed\/rheum\/Moore.htm\">Gerald Moore, M.D.,<\/a> senior associate dean for academic affairs.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;Dr. Caverzagie has been very active nationally in medical education,&rdquo; Dr. Moore said. &ldquo;He will lead UNMC&rsquo;s efforts in implementing various new strategies to allow us to better educate the physicians of tomorrow and make them successful.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\nAs associate dean, Dr. Caverzagie will be responsible for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nidentifying, implementing and assessing educational strategies at the undergraduate, graduate and post graduate level;<\/li>\n<li>\nmonitoring local and national trends in medical education and making recommendations for the integration of appropriate training and assessment programs for the College of Medicine.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nHe currently serves as education liaison for the leadership group for OneTeam, the new clinical enterprise initiative involving the College of Medicine, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nebraskamed.com\/\">The Nebraska Medical Center<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unmcphysicians.com\/\">UNMC Physicians<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bellevuemed.com\/\">Bellevue Medical Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;In this capacity, he ensures the group doesn&rsquo;t lose sight of the important role of education,&rdquo; Dr. Moore said.<\/p>\n<p>\nDr. Caverzagie, who works clinically as a hospitalist, obtained his medical degree from UNMC in 2001 and served as chief resident during his internal medicine residency at UNMC. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.<\/p>\n<p>\nFollowing his residency, Dr. Caverzagie completed a two-year Clinician-Educator Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania focusing on self-assessment among trainees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;I&rsquo;m excited to be given this new opportunity,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s important that the College of Medicine stay current with national trends, anticipate appropriate changes in the educational landscape and identify opportunities for innovation and growth.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\nAn expert in the assessment and evaluation of learners, Dr. Caverzagie has been a national leader in internal medicine&rsquo;s implementation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acgme.org\/acgmeweb\/tabid\/435\/ProgramandInstitutionalAccreditation\/NextAccreditationSystem.aspx\">Next Accreditation System<\/a> and also collaborates with leaders worldwide in topics regarding medical education redesign.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\nAs a teacher, Dr. Caverzagie enjoys assisting students and residents in complex decision-making and communication skills, as well as teaching about topics such as health care policy, education reform and the hidden curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>\nHe has served in a variety of roles for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.im.org\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine<\/a> (AAIM), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abim.org\/\">American Board of Internal Medicine<\/a> (ABIM), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hospitalmedicine.org\/\">Society of Hospital Medicine<\/a> (SHM) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/ama\">American Medical Association<\/a> (AMA).<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Through world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond.
