UNMC cell phone holders with Verizon accounts should be aware of a new phishing scam disguised as a message from Verizon customer service. <\/p>\n

The Verizon44 scam purports to be a call from Verizon. Do not call the number that appears on the caller ID; do not log onto any web site the caller or texter directs you to. The caller ID will say “Verizon Customer Service,” and even display a 1-800-922-xxxx number similar to the real Verizon customer service number.<\/p>\n

According to a Verizon customer service representative, the verizon44.com site is a phishing site built by criminals to defraud Verizon customers. Do not submit account info — the intent is to steal login credentials and subscribe victims to unwanted scam services and apps that bill every month.<\/p>\n

Another scam going on called the Antigua and Barbuda scam involves all types of phone lines, including land lines. Callers will call and hang up, hoping for a return call which is then charged for international long distance. You may even be put on hold for long periods, to rack up the charges.
