Here&#8217;s a brief rundown of his background and the expertise he brings to UNMC.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Name:<\/b> John Dickinson, M.D., Ph.D.\n<li><b>Hometown:<\/b> Yankton, S.D.\n<li><b>New title and department at UNMC: <\/b> Assistant professor, department of internal medicine, division of pulmonary, critical care, sleep &#038; allergy<\/ul>\n<p><b>Research\/Professional interests:<\/b><br \/>\nI am interested in the care of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and will join the team at the Adult CF Center at UNMC. My lab focuses on the regulation of mucus secretion in the lung. Excessive secretion of mucus in the airways plays a significant role in diseases such as asthma, cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Currently, I am studying the role that autophagy plays in the signal pathways leading to mucus secretion. <\/p>\n<p><b>How I fell in love with pulmonary and critical care medicine: <\/b><br \/>\nI enjoy the team approach to medicine, which is employed in the ICU as part of critical care medicine and in the CF clinic.  A well-organized team improves outcomes for patients and also is a lot of fun. <\/p>\n<p><b>Degrees:<\/b> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>M.D., Ph.D. from UNMC, 2007\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Previous Positions: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Post-doctoral research fellow,  Washington University, St. Louis\n<li>Clinical fellow in pulmonary &#038; critical care medicine, Washington University, St. Louis\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Memberships:<\/b> <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>American Thoracic Society\n<li> American College of Chest Physicians<\/ul>\n<p><b>Three things people may not know about me:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I enjoy trail running.\n<li>I also enjoy St. Louis Cardinal baseball (the other &#8220;Go Big Red!&#8221;).\n<li>I know it&#8217;s strange, but I love a large winter snowstorm.
