\n<\/TABLE>Six faculty members celebrate service milestones of 40 years and will be recognized during the annual faculty meeting at 4 p.m. April 24 in the Durham Research Center Auditorium. <\/p>\n

Below, two honorees share memorable moments:<\/p>\n

David Bolam, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics newborn medicine, said:<\/p>\n

“My favorite memory of UNMC is the camaraderie of the pediatric faculty when I first started in 1974. Everyone was supportive of the program and each other particularly Gerry Van Leeuwen, the chairman, and Mel Jenkins, the vice chair. Hobe Wiltse and Rashid Al Rashid were two outstanding teachers and mentors.”<\/p>\n

Barbara Hurlbert, M.D., vice-chairwoman of education and professor of anesthesia, said:<\/p>\n

“I have enjoyed teaching medical students and residents my entire career and have been flattered when a medical student later tells me that it was my enthusiasm for my career that inspired them to enter the specialty of anesthesiology. Although I am proud of the many teaching awards I have received throughout my career, I am most proud of the accomplishments of the residents I have taught, some of whom are my partners and colleagues today at UNMC. If I had to pick my fondest memory, it would have to be the day my husband and I, as faculty at UNMC, placed the doctoral hood on our daughter at her medical school graduation ceremony.<\/p>\n

“I believe I am the only female academic anesthesiologist in the country to have her daughter finish her anesthesiology residency and return to practice with her mother as a partner. At one time, I had both of my daughters working with me daily at the university: Mary Beth in the operating suites and Suzanne in the post anesthesia care unit. <\/p>\n

“If I had to choose the most memorable case I performed at UNMC, it would be the separation of the ischiopagus conjoined twins. For one year I administered numerous anesthetics to this set of twins while various surgical subspecialty teams performed many procedures that ultimately led up to the successful separation of these two boys at UNMC.”<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
