{"id":46485,"date":"2014-03-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-21T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/03\/21\/nu-regents-formally-approve-unmc-center-for-reducing-health-disparities\/"},"modified":"2022-08-22T16:28:30","modified_gmt":"2022-08-22T21:28:30","slug":"nu-regents-formally-approve-unmc-center-for-reducing-health-disparities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2014\/03\/21\/nu-regents-formally-approve-unmc-center-for-reducing-health-disparities\/","title":{"rendered":"NU Regents formally approve UNMC Center for Reducing Health Disparities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>\nThe University of Nebraska Board of Regents on Friday approved the Center for Reducing Health Disparities at the University of Nebraska Medical Center&rsquo;s College of Public Health.<\/p>\n<p>\nFrom health fairs, smoking cessation programs and parenting workshops to support groups for breast cancer survivors and people with diabetes, the Center for Reducing Health Disparities collaborates with community organizations and government agencies to improve public health and the quality of health and wellness of racial\/ethnic minorities and rural and underserved populations by reducing and ultimately eliminating health disparities.<\/p>\n<p>\nDejun Su, Ph.D., director of the Center for Reducing Health Disparities, said the center&rsquo;s team has developed far-reaching outreach and education partnerships in the community and is now poised to build research strength.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;Nebraska is doing well in terms of U.S. health indicators, but in Omaha we still have many health disparities issues &ndash; whether they are infant mortality rates, chronic disease prevalence, mental health, health literacy, or access to affordable care &ndash; that give us the passion to work closely with community partners on a daily basis to develop cost-effective programs to reduce and eliminate health disparities,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;The center serves as a valuable platform for UNMC scholars, staff and students to partner with community stakeholders and residents to initiate and sustain cost-effective health programs and other health promotion activities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\nFour goals have been identified to guide the center&rsquo;s future activities. These goals are:<\/p>\n<p>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nEnhancing the role of UNMC in addressing disparities in health outcomes among Nebraskans through consistent community engagement, partnerships, and advocacy;<\/li>\n<li>\nPromoting translational research that would help reduce disparities in health status and health care at the local state, national and global levels;<\/li>\n<li>\nDiversifying the sources of funding support for the center and gradually reduce its dependence on internal support from UNMC; and<\/li>\n<li>\nSupporting UNMC&rsquo;s education initiatives in health disparities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\nAlthough the Center for Reducing Health Disparities has operated since 2006, it became a regents-recognized center with the board&rsquo;s action on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Center evolved from UNMC&rsquo;s Community Partnership, which founded the North and South Omaha Community Care Councils in 1996 and 1998 respectively. Involvement in the North and South Omaha communities has effectively engaged the African-American, Latino and Native American populations, Dr. Su said.<\/p>\n<p>\nHe is now working with UNMC&rsquo;s hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, to expand health services in those communities.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;We want to leverage our partnerships with bigger programs to go one step further, to collect data that will tell how successful we are in reducing chronic conditions, promoting healthy life styles and using preventive care services,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\nMajor grant applications are pending with the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to study the health of minority males and develop a telehealth program for diabetic patients in Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn other action, the Board of Regents dissolved the Center for Humanities, Ethics and Society (CHES). The center has served its purpose and is no longer needed, said Jane Meza, Ph.D., interim dean of the College of Public Health.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;The College continues to mature and our focus has moved toward five core disciplines of public health: biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health science, health policy and management, and social and behavioral sciences,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;The educational content that CHES developed has been integrated throughout the master&rsquo;s and doctoral level curriculum and further content is no longer needed. Also, our research focus has shifted, so the CHES infrastructure is no longer essential. Additionally, two of the four core faculty members have retired this past year.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\n&ldquo;This will allow us to refocus CHES resources into other areas,&rdquo; Dr. Meza said. &ldquo;We came to this decision after lengthy consultation, discussion and unanimous agreement by senior leadership.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Through world-class research and patient care, UNMC generates breakthroughs that make life better for people throughout Nebraska and beyond.
