\nA total of 122 senior medical students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/a> in Omaha received their residency assignments today during a Match Day ceremony held on campus. A residency is a training program for newly graduated medical students in the medical area of their choice. Residencies range in length from three to six years.<\/p>\n

Forty-six percent of UNMC students are staying in Nebraska for their training, and 59 percent of UNMC students matched in primary care, which includes family medicine, internal medicine, internal medicine\/pediatrics, pediatrics and obstetrics\/gynecology.<\/p>\n

\nStudents are matched by the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP) through a computer program to align their preferences for residency programs in order to fill the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals. The NRMP Main Residency Match results released today show that 16,399 U.S. medical school seniors have matched to first-year residency positions.<\/p>\n

\nThe UNMC students, slated to graduate May 10, are listed by hometown, name, specialty and residency assignment.<\/p>\n
