Gold, M.D., emphasized the need for alignment in UNMC&#8217;s education, research and clinical missions, and Lewis Sandy, M.D., executive vice president of clinical advancement for UnitedHealth Group, outlined some of the challenges and opportunities that academic medical centers will face in the next decade.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The retreat went very well,&#8221; said Fred Salzinger, assistant vice chancellor for planning and budget. &#8220;The participants were energetic, involved and provided critical input into the discussions. Many issues relevant to our growth as a campus were brought to the table for discussion, and we will now put together an action plan on many items that provide a roadmap for our campus moving forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to UNMC faculty, staff and students, several other groups were represented at the retreat. They included the Med Center&#8217;s clinical enterprise, Children&#8217;s Hospital &#038; Medical Center, the VA Nebraska-Iowa Health Care System, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the University of Nebraska and the University of Nebraska Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Bill Dinsmoor and Bradley Britigan, M.D., the CEO and president, respectively, of the clinical enterprise, provided an overview of the strategic goals for the clinical enterprise.  <\/p>\n<p>Attendees also broke into several breakout sessions. Those topics included:<br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI>Innovative educational models that embrace new technology.<br \/>\n<LI>Development of clinical and research programs as new facilities are built.<br \/>\n<LI>Telemedicine and other innovative technology to improve care over distance.<br \/>\n<LI>The use of bioinformatics and big data.<br \/>\n<LI>Recruitment, retention and engagement of diverse faculty, staff and students.<br \/>\n<LI>Awareness, engagement and access to health and wellness programs.<br \/>\n<LI>Integration of colleges and institutes into the clinical enterprise for education, patient care and research.<br \/>\n<LI>Communication and collaboration among colleges and the faculty to address strategic research issues.<br \/>\n<LI>Development of tools to enhance the learning and working environments across the enterprise.<br \/>\n<LI>Improve population health with the goals of making Nebraska and Omaha the healthiest state\/city in the U.S.<\/UL><\/p>\n<p>Following the meeting, the leaders for the small-group discussions submitted written reports to Dr. Gold. Those reports will be the basis for an updated strategic plan that will be publicized later this week, Salzinger said.
