He died Sunday, Feb. 8, from injuries<\/p>\n<p>suffered in a one-car accident. The visitation and rosary will be<\/p>\n<p>held at the Heafey-Heafey-Hoffmann chapel at 78th<i> <\/i>Street<\/p>\n<p>and West Center Road. <\/p>\n<p>Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday, Feb. 10, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 14330<\/p>\n<p>Eagle Run Drive. Dr. Alonso, chief of cardiothoracic surgery and<\/p>\n<p>assistant professor of surgery at UNMC, was on his way to work<\/p>\n<p>Saturday, Feb. 7, when the accident occurred.<\/p>\n<p>Colleagues at UNMC and Nebraska Health System<\/p>\n<p>mourned his death: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&quot;He was such a young surgeon with a\n<p>        remarkable record and a tremendous future ahead. We are<\/p>\n<p>        distressed that he was taken so early in life. The<\/p>\n<p>        Medical Center community grieves this great loss. Our<\/p>\n<p>        thoughts are now with his family.&quot; &#8212; Harold M.<\/p>\n<p>        Maurer, M.D., UNMC College of Medicine dean.<\/li>\n<li>&quot;It&#8217;s always a shock when a\n<p>        physician and surgeon of this importance is taken from a<\/p>\n<p>        medical staff. Everyone at the Nebraska Health System<\/p>\n<p>        will miss Dr. Alonso and we extend our deepest sympathies<\/p>\n<p>        to his family.&quot; &#8212; Louis W. Shaw Jr., M.D.,<\/p>\n<p>        chief of surgery. <\/li>\n<li>&quot;It&#8217;s a terrible loss for his\n<p>        family, the Medical Center and the entire community. He<\/p>\n<p>        represented an individual who brought to Omaha and the<\/p>\n<p>        surrounding area an expertise in surgery that was really<\/p>\n<p>        second to none. But, more than that, the greatest<\/p>\n<p>        testimonial to Dr. Alonso is that he touched all the<\/p>\n<p>        people that he met &#8212; as a father, a friend and a<\/p>\n<p>        physician.&quot; &#8212; Alan Langnas, D.O., chief of<\/p>\n<p>        transplantation. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dr. Alonso, 39, joined UNMC&#8217;s<\/p>\n<p>cardiothoracic surgery program in 1992. He was promoted to<\/p>\n<p>program chief earlier this year. As a cardiothoracic surgeon, he<\/p>\n<p>performed heart and lung transplants, and other open-heart<\/p>\n<p>surgical procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Alonso earned his undergraduate and medical<\/p>\n<p>degrees from the University of Puerto Rico. From 1984 to 1989, he<\/p>\n<p>did his general surgery residency at University District Hospital<\/p>\n<p>and Veterans Administration Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Alonso did his cardiothoracic residency at Ohio State<\/p>\n<p>University and Columbus Childrens Hospital from 1990 to 1992. <\/p>\n<p>He is survived by his wife, Annabel, who also<\/p>\n<p>is a physician, and their four children. He also has two sons in<\/p>\n<p>San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p>Memorials can be made to the Dr. Anselmo Alonso<\/p>\n<p>Memorial Fund, in care of the University of Nebraska Foundation,<\/p>\n<p>8712 W.
