{"id":46932,"date":"2003-04-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2003-04-16T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2003\/04\/16\/unmc-college-of-nursing-west-nebraska-division-communitypartners-invite-public-to-free-third-annual-asthma-awareness-event-saturdayapril-26\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T10:44:58","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T15:44:58","slug":"unmc-college-of-nursing-west-nebraska-division-communitypartners-invite-public-to-free-third-annual-asthma-awareness-event-saturdayapril-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2003\/04\/16\/unmc-college-of-nursing-west-nebraska-division-communitypartners-invite-public-to-free-third-annual-asthma-awareness-event-saturdayapril-26\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division, community\n\npartners invite public to free Third Annual Asthma Awareness event Saturday,\n\nApril 26"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing West Nebraska<\/p>\n<p>Division in Scottsbluff and community partners will hold the Third Annual<\/p>\n<p>Asthma Awareness event Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event,<\/p>\n<p>which is open to the public, will offer free asthma screenings and education<\/p>\n<p>at the Monument Mall in Scottsbluff, 2302 Frontage Road.<\/p>\n<p>Sponsors of the event are the college, LINCARE, Inc., Panhandle Community<\/p>\n<p>Services, the Nebraska Student Nurses Association, Lakhman Gondalia, M.D.<\/p>\n<p>of the Wyoming Chest and Allergy Clinic, Cheyenne, Wyo., and other area<\/p>\n<p>health providers.<\/p>\n<p>The event will include educational childrens activities. Prize drawings<\/p>\n<p>will be held. At 2 p.m., a release of 100 balloons into the air will signify<\/p>\n<p>lifting the burden of asthma.<\/p>\n<p>Kim Rodehorst, Ph.D., assistant professor, and Jan Judy, assistant professor,<\/p>\n<p>both of the UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division, said the purpose<\/p>\n<p>of the event is to increase awareness of the burden of asthma and the need<\/p>\n<p>to improve asthma care. Free lung function tests for screening of asthma<\/p>\n<p>will be available, as well as education, including what the common triggers<\/p>\n<p>of asthma are, asthma medications, use of peak flow monitor and signs and<\/p>\n<p>symptoms of asthma.<\/p>\n<p>There is a lot to be done to educate our community about asthma so<\/p>\n<p>those with asthma can control it and live active lives, Dr. Rodehorst<\/p>\n<p>said. Despite the new National Institutes of Health asthma guidelines<\/p>\n<p>drafted by experts around the country, there are patients who dont get<\/p>\n<p>the recommended asthma management and treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Asthma is a chronic, inflammatory lung disease characterized by recurrent<\/p>\n<p>breathing problems. During an asthma attack, the lining of the airways<\/p>\n<p>swells, muscles around the airways tighten and mucus clogs the tiny airways<\/p>\n<p>in the lungs, making breathing difficult. It is estimated that 150 million<\/p>\n<p>people worldwide suffer from asthma, making it one of the most common chronic<\/p>\n<p>diseases worldwide. Left untreated, asthma often leads to hospitalization,<\/p>\n<p>absenteeism from school and work, limitations on physical activity, and,<\/p>\n<p>in some cases, death.<\/p>\n<p>Information about
