The health center was previously located at<br \/>\n56th &amp; Ames Ave. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The center will represent a new focus on building healthier communities<br \/>\nthrough closer relationships between the community and UNMC health providers<br \/>\nand promotion of health education. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Open house activities include free screenings for high blood pressure,<br \/>\nglaucoma, cholesterol and blood sugar. Free activities for children include<br \/>\nface-painting, teddy bear and doll check-ups, hand-washing demonstrations<br \/>\nand growth profiles. Other activities include drill team performances and<br \/>\na community organization fair. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&quot;A unique feature of the center will be that health care provided<br \/>\nwill be based on input from members of the community through the Community<br \/>\nCare Council,&quot; said Sally English, regional manager of the center.<br \/>\n<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The Community Care Council, comprised of 20 community leaders, has been<br \/>\norganized to relay community health concerns and priorities to UNMC staff.<br \/>\nThe council&#8217;s goals are part of UNMC&#8217;s Community Partnership Initiative,<br \/>\na plan to work closely with neighborhoods and communities that UNMC serves<br \/>\nin order to address community health issues together. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The teen community will be represented by the newly-formed Youth Community<br \/>\nCare Council, a group of 15 area high school students. They represent North,<br \/>\nNorthwest, Central, Benson and Burke high schools. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&quot;The development of a structured community partnership effort will<br \/>\nnot only improve the health of Nebraskans, but also will give our faculty<br \/>\nand students new opportunities for education, research and patient care,&quot;<br \/>\nsaid Robin Kammandel, Community Partnership leader. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The open house begins with a 10:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony that<br \/>\nwill be attended by the UNMC Chancellor William O. Berndt, Ph.D., Carolyn<br \/>\nGreen, president of the Community Care Council, and members of the council,<br \/>\nas well as families and neighborhood residents. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&quot;Smile,&quot; an exhibit of colorful tile artwork on the waiting<br \/>\nroom walls of the health center, will be unveiled. The tiles were individually-designed<br \/>\nby students at Fontenelle Elementary, Monroe Middle School and Benson High<br \/>\nSchool, in conjunction with Joslyn Art Museum. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Health services provided at UMA at Baker Place include family medicine,<br \/>\npediatrics, obstetrics, general dentistry, pediatric dentistry, psychology<br \/>\nand psychiatry, laboratory and radiology services. In addition, the Douglas<br \/>\nCounty Health Dept. provides services, including immunizations and screenings<br \/>\nfor sexually-transmitted diseases. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Health-care providers at the center include: Amy George, M.D., and William<br \/>\nMinier, M.D., family medicine services; Susan Hollins, M.D., and Peg Schneider,<br \/>\na physician assistant, pediatric care; Greg Davis, D.D.S., dentistry; and<br \/>\nMarvin Stancil, M.D., and Lewe Okereke, M.D., obstetrics and gynecology.<br \/>\n<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Health center hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday<br \/>\nand Friday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday. Saturday hours are 9 a.m.<br \/>\nto noon. The facility includes 10 exam rooms, a procedure room, X-ray and<br \/>\nlaboratory rooms, as well as a dental exam rooms. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The health center includes a conference room for use by community groups,<br \/>\nand a health resource center that will contain two computers with connection<br \/>\nto medical information and the Internet, a TV\/VCR unit for educational<br \/>\ntapes, and a library of health information. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>For more information on UMA at Baker Place or to make an appointment,<br \/>\ncall (402) 595-2280.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Organizations participating in the open house are the YMCA, the YWCA,<br \/>\nthe Great Plains Girls Scouts Council, Girls Inc., the Benson Library,<br \/>\nOmaha Housing Authority First Step, the UNMC Eppley Cancer Institute, the<br \/>\nUNMC Lied Transplant Center, the Ruth Solomon Girls Center, New Community<br \/>\nDevelopment and the UNMC Mobile Nursing Unit.
