{"id":46979,"date":"1998-01-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1998-01-06T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/1998\/01\/06\/unmc-faculty-member-headsaccreditation-program-for-continents-cellular-transplantationfacilities\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T11:01:56","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T16:01:56","slug":"unmc-faculty-member-headsaccreditation-program-for-continents-cellular-transplantationfacilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/1998\/01\/06\/unmc-faculty-member-headsaccreditation-program-for-continents-cellular-transplantationfacilities\/","title":{"rendered":"UNMC Faculty Member Heads\n\nAccreditation Program For Continent&#8217;s Cellular Transplantation\n\nFacilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><\/p>\n<p>A two-year effort to establish uniform standards for bone<\/p>\n<p>marrow, and other cellular transplantation treatments in North<\/p>\n<p>America, has resulted in the implementation of an accreditation<\/p>\n<p>program headed by a faculty member at the University of Nebraska<\/p>\n<p>Medical Center. <\/p>\n<p>The accreditation program also will be headquartered at UNMC. <\/p>\n<p>Phyllis Warkentin, M.D., professor of pathology and<\/p>\n<p>microbiology, and pediatrics, and medical director of UNMC&#8217;s<\/p>\n<p>unrelated-donor marrow transplant program, has served as chairman<\/p>\n<p>of the accreditation program of the Foundation for the<\/p>\n<p>Accreditation of Hematopoietic Cell Therapy (FAHCT) since it was<\/p>\n<p>formed in 1995. During the past two years she has devoted time to<\/p>\n<p>establishing the foundation&#8217;s office and development of the<\/p>\n<p>accreditation process that the foundation is intended to operate.<\/p>\n<p>The initial tasks are almost complete, Dr. Warkentin said, and<\/p>\n<p>the foundation recently hired an office administrator. To date,<\/p>\n<p>101 facilities across the continent have agreed to participate in<\/p>\n<p>the voluntary accreditation process. Seven of these facilities<\/p>\n<p>already have been inspected. In addition, the foundation has<\/p>\n<p>completed the first edition of FACHT Standards and a companion<\/p>\n<p>accreditation manual to assist transplant programs, cell<\/p>\n<p>collection facilities and cell-processing laboratories in their<\/p>\n<p>efforts to comply with FAHCT standards. The foundation also held<\/p>\n<p>a training workshop last year in Omaha for 80 accreditation<\/p>\n<p>inspectors.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Warkentin said every facility in North America that<\/p>\n<p>performs at least 10 transplants per year is eligible to<\/p>\n<p>participate in the accreditation process. That would mean between<\/p>\n<p>about 200 to 300 facilities in North America would be able to<\/p>\n<p>participate in the program, she said.<\/p>\n<p>FAHCT was formed after two similar organizations combined<\/p>\n<p>their standard-setting efforts. <\/p>\n<p>The two groups are the International Society for Hematotherapy<\/p>\n<p>and Graft Engineering (ISHAGE), which is a laboratory-oriented<\/p>\n<p>organization, and the American Society of Blood and <\/p>\n<p>Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT), which is a clinical transplant<\/p>\n<p>research organization.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The clinical group wrote a set of standards, as did the<\/p>\n<p>laboratory group,&quot; Dr. Warkentin said. &quot;Then, it was<\/p>\n<p>decided that the process would be better if merged.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The accreditation process is voluntary, she said, but a set of<\/p>\n<p>standards is vital in assuring continued high-quality research<\/p>\n<p>and patient care in the field. In addition, the Food and Drug<\/p>\n<p>Administration has announced its intent to regulate the field of<\/p>\n<p>hematopoietic cell transplantation &#8212; but has suggested that it<\/p>\n<p>may be less likely to inspect facilities accredited by FAHCT, if<\/p>\n<p>FAHCT is able to establish and maintain a credible accreditation<\/p>\n<p>program.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;One of the overall goals of this program is to provide<\/p>\n<p>evidence that we can regulate ourselves to achieve measurable<\/p>\n<p>good,&quot; Dr. Warkentin said. &quot;Still, the real purpose is<\/p>\n<p>to provide the highest level of laboratory and clinical care for<\/p>\n<p>patients receiving this type of treatment.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Warkentin was a natural choice to lead the accreditation<\/p>\n<p>effort. She is a member of both ISHAGE and ASBMT. She has worked<\/p>\n<p>in both clinical and laboratory cellular transplantation since <\/p>\n<p>the early 1980s, and has been heavily involved in related<\/p>\n<p>research during the same period. She also <\/p>\n<p>served as chairman of the Standards Committee of the National<\/p>\n<p>Marrow Donor Program, and as a member of the Standards Committee<\/p>\n<p>of the American Association of Blood Banks.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Warkentin joined the UNMC faculty in 1988. In 1989, UNMC<\/p>\n<p>was accepted as a transplantation center for unrelated-donor bone<\/p>\n<p>marrow transplants. Dr. Warkentin has coordinated the program<\/p>\n<p>since its start.<\/p>\n<p>UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the<\/p>\n<p>state. Through its commitment to research, education and patient<\/p>\n<p>care, UNMC has established itself as one of the <\/p>\n<p>country&#8217;s leading centers for cancer research and treatment<\/p>\n<p>and solid organ transplantation. Millions of dollars in research<\/p>\n<p>grants and contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually.
