Byers W. Shaw Jr., M.D., avid biker, transplant surgeon and<\/p>\n

chief of surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center,<\/p>\n

will carry a message to each community as he rides across<\/p>\n

Nebraska during the Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska Eighteen<\/p>\n

"Barnstormer’s Tour," June 7-13.<\/p>\n

Along the overnight stops in Gering, Oshkosh, Paxton, Arnold,<\/p>\n

Ravenna, Sutton and Hickman, Dr. Shaw will present BRAN 98<\/p>\n

"Tree of Life" mementos and an invitation to community<\/p>\n

leaders to ask their help in spreading the word about the<\/p>\n

critical need for organ and tissue donors. Dr. Shaw is scheduled<\/p>\n

to speak at the awards ceremony at the end of the BRAN ride in<\/p>\n

Hickman.<\/p>\n

The "Tree of Life" memento contains a cottonwood<\/p>\n

seed, which, when planted grows into a large tree, much like the<\/p>\n

seeds of knowledge that flourish in the educational process. Dr.<\/p>\n

Shaw’s presentation is part of the UNMC and Nebraska Health<\/p>\n

System "Tree of Life" awareness campaign.<\/p>\n

The campaign promotes the gift of organ donation and what it<\/p>\n

means to Nebraskans and other Americans who were dying from<\/p>\n

end-stage organ failure, and to the donor families who have given<\/p>\n

the "gift of life," said Kolleen Thompson, manager of<\/p>\n

organ recovery services for the Nebraska Health System and one of<\/p>\n

the coordinators of the statewide campaign.<\/p>\n

"We’re always looking for opportunities to tell as<\/p>\n

many people as possible about the life-saving gift of organ<\/p>\n

donation," said Dr. Shaw. "If every potential organ<\/p>\n

donor in the U.S. donated his or her organs, a critical shortage<\/p>\n

of organs would not exist. One organ donor can potentially save<\/p>\n

the lives of eight people."<\/p>\n

A Nebraska resident since 1985 when he established one of the<\/p>\n

top liver transplant programs in the country, Dr. Shaw and a team<\/p>\n

of health professionals have since performed more than 2,800<\/p>\n

liver, kidney, pancreas, lung, heart and small bowel transplants.<\/p>\n

The campaign, sponsored by UNMC and the Nebraska Health<\/p>\n

System, also makes available to communities, free educational<\/p>\n

materials such as brochures, donor cards and films. Transplant<\/p>\n

faculty and staff also are available to visit communities to<\/p>\n

speak to schools, community organizations and hospitals about<\/p>\n

organ and tissue donation.<\/p>\n

A series of films are available from the James Redford<\/p>\n

Institute for Transplant Awareness. The institute is an<\/p>\n

independent not-for-profit organization founded in 1995 whose<\/p>\n

purpose is to raise awareness in the field of transplantation and<\/p>\n

organ donation.<\/p>\n

Because of a critical shortage of donor organs, more than 411<\/p>\n

Nebraskans, along with more than 58,000 adults and children<\/p>\n

nationally, are on waiting lists to receive organ transplants,<\/p>\n

according to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) in<\/p>\n

Richmond, Va. UNOS maintains the national registry for all<\/p>\n

candidates who are on waiting lists for solid organ transplants<\/p>\n

in the United States.<\/p>\n

Potential organ donors are those in good health who’ve<\/p>\n

suffered irreversible brain-death through accidents or illnesses.<\/p>\n

Brain-death means brain function has stopped permanently but the<\/p>\n

heart and lungs continue to function only through the use of<\/p>\n

artificial life support.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of Nebraska children and adults and thousands<\/p>\n

nationally, are alive today because of organ donors, and because<\/p>\n

of the generosity of the donors’ families, who give final consent<\/p>\n

for donation, said Thompson. But on the sober side, about 11<\/p>\n

people die each day in the U.S. waiting for an organ, she said.<\/p>\n

Adults can be organ and\/or tissue donors by signing the back<\/p>\n

of their driver’s license at any time, not just when renewing a<\/p>\n

driver’s license. They also should tell family and friends of<\/p>\n

their wishes, because although an individual may consent to<\/p>\n

donate, the family has the final authority to donate the organs<\/p>\n

of either an adult or child, said Thompson.<\/p>\n

The UNMC-NHS campaign also creates awareness of The Lied<\/p>\n

Transplant Center of UNMC and NHS, which is scheduled to open in<\/p>\n

January. The solid organ and bone marrow transplantation center<\/p>\n

will be a national model for cooperative care — an innovative<\/p>\n

concept that involves a family member or friend in the<\/p>\n

post-transplant care of the patient.<\/p>\n

The 14-level building will feature 44 patient care suites as<\/p>\n

well as considerable space devoted to education and transplant<\/p>\n

research.<\/p>\n
