A group of 14 senior high school students and an instructor from Broken<\/p>\n

Bow High School recently toured the University of Nebraska Medical Center<\/p>\n

in Omaha. While on campus, the group received an in-depth tour, which details<\/p>\n

several key UNMC programs and services such as radiation science technology,<\/p>\n

physical therapy, anesthesia and pulmonary function.<\/p>\n

The UNMC campus is composed of nine major components, including Colleges<\/p>\n

of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy, School of Allied Health Professions,<\/p>\n

the UNMC\/Eppley Cancer Center, Munroe-Meyer Institute, Lied Transplant<\/p>\n

Center and the Office of Graduate Studies and Research.<\/p>\n

We are happy that the students from Broken Bow could come and tour<\/p>\n

the Medical Center, said Harold M. Maurer, M.D., UNMC chancellor. We<\/p>\n

are proud of what we are doing at UNMC, and we love to share it with Nebraska<\/p>\n

communities.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education, outreach and patient care,<\/p>\n

UNMC has established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for<\/p>\n

cancer research and treatment and solid organ transplantation. Nearly $31<\/p>\n

million in research grants and contracts were awarded to UNMC scientists<\/p>\n

during the past fiscal year. In addition, UNMCs educational programs are<\/p>\n

responsible for training more health professionals practicing in Nebraska<\/p>\n

than any other institution.<\/p>\n

Nebraska Health System (NHS) is the partnership of Clarkson Hospital,<\/p>\n

the first hospital in Nebraska, and University Hospital, the primary teaching<\/p>\n

facility for the University of Nebraska Medical Center. The combined hospital<\/p>\n

is an 835-bed facility and serves approximately 25 percent of the Omaha-area<\/p>\n

market. NHS operates clinics and health care centers serving Omaha, Plattsmouth,<\/p>\n

Gretna and Auburn in Nebraska; and Council Bluffs and Shenandoah in Iowa.<\/p>\n

In addition, NHS physicians operate more than 300 outpatient clinics in<\/p>\n

100 communities in four states. NHS provides access to tertiary and primary<\/p>\n

care including world-class specialized treatment such as solid organ transplantation,<\/p>\n

burn care, wound care, geriatrics, bone marrow (stem cell) transplantation<\/p>\n

and other cancer treatments. NHS affiliate hospitals include Shenandoah<\/p>\n

Memorial Hospital and Community Hospital in Fairfax, Mo.<\/p>\n
