The University of Nebraska Medical Center Student Association for Rural<\/p>\n

Health, made up of students from rural areas studying at UNMC, held its<\/p>\n

fifth Rural Health Professions Career Day Oct. 1. The event, also sponsored<\/p>\n

by the Rural Health Education Network, introduced students with an interest<\/p>\n

in health careers to the multitude of careers available in the health sciences.<\/p>\n

Two-hundred-and-one high school students from 71 rural communities learned<\/p>\n

about opportunities in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, physician<\/p>\n

assistant, physical therapy, medical technology and other fields. The students<\/p>\n

attended three, tailored 30-minute informational sessions of their choosing<\/p>\n

with various health professionals.<\/p>\n

I think it helps to learn about the different health disciplines do<\/p>\n

what types of health careers there are and how long the student would<\/p>\n

be going to school, said Roxanna Jokela, coordinator of the UNMC Rural<\/p>\n

Health Education Network.<\/p>\n

Lindy Van Matre, an eleventh-grade student at Gibbon High School, said<\/p>\n

she attend the event to look at her choices. Before you go to school,<\/p>\n

you kind of want to know what youre getting into, she said. I came here<\/p>\n

to look at my choices for a medical career.<\/p>\n

The Rural Health Professions Career Day is one of many UNMC efforts<\/p>\n

to assist in Growing Our Own future health professionals for Nebraska.<\/p>\n
