The 2000 Cattlemen’s Ball will be held Saturday, June 3 near Arthur,<\/p>\n

Neb. on the world famous Haythorn Ranch. Hosts will be Waldo and Beldora<\/p>\n

Haythorn, Craig and Jody Haythorn and Sally and Bob Mayden. The Haythorn<\/p>\n

Ranch, which is located about 20 miles north of Ogallala, is world renowned<\/p>\n

as the single largest producer of American Quarter Horses in the United<\/p>\n

States and the third largest in the world.<\/p>\n

The Cattlemen’s Ball is held to promote beef in a healthy diet and to<\/p>\n

showcase rural Nebraska. All of the money raised will stay in Nebraska<\/p>\n

with 90 percent of the proceeds going toward research projects at the University<\/p>\n

of Nebraska Medical Center Eppley Cancer Center. The remaining 10 percent<\/p>\n

raised at the 2000 ball will be directed to health care in the local area.<\/p>\n

The Haythorn family has a strong personal interest in the Cattlemen’s<\/p>\n

Ball mission to fight cancer by funding research and promoting beef in<\/p>\n

a healthy diet.<\/p>\n

“We’ve had cancer in our family and would really like to do anything<\/p>\n

we can to help in terms of cancer research,” said Jody Haythorn, 2000 Cattlemen’s<\/p>\n

Ball host. “Being ranchers, it also appeals to us to promote the awareness<\/p>\n

of beef in a healthy diet.”<\/p>\n

The 1999 Cattlemen’s Ball held at the Robb Ranch near Lexington, Neb.<\/p>\n

raised $170,000 with $17,000  staying in the Lexington area.<\/p>\n

The UNMC Eppley Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute designated<\/p>\n

cancer center — a distinction held by only 55 centers in the country.<\/p>\n

Of the $34.3 million in competitive, external research grants and contracts<\/p>\n

awarded to UNMC in 1997-98, cancer-related research accounted for about<\/p>\n

one-half of that amount.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education, outreach and patient care,<\/p>\n

UNMC has established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for<\/p>\n

cancer research and treatment and solid organ transplantation. UNMC’s educational<\/p>\n

programs are responsible for training more health professionals practicing<\/p>\n
