Wild horse handler, Bryan Neubert of Alturus, Calif., will be featured<\/p>\n

at the second annual Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska to be held June 5 at<\/p>\n

the Robb Ranch southeast of Lexington. An expert in horse handling and<\/p>\n

colt starting, Neubert will demonstrate his techniques in gentling a wild<\/p>\n

horse from the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Facility<\/p>\n

at Elm Creek. Over a period of a couple hours he will gain the horse’s<\/p>\n

trust and eventually halter and lead it.<\/p>\n

Along with the wild horse handler, Lexington area trick rider Max Reynolds<\/p>\n

will be performing his Roman-style riding act which involves standing on<\/p>\n

the backs of two running horses and performing several stunts. He also<\/p>\n

will be doing some trick roping.<\/p>\n

Additional entertainment will be provided by country artist Michael<\/p>\n

Peterson. Peterson’s new album, “Being Human,” is scheduled for release<\/p>\n

on June 8, just three days after the ball. The first single off the album<\/p>\n

is “Somethin’ Bout A Sunday.” His other hit songs include “By the Book,”<\/p>\n

“From Here to Eternity” and “Love’s Great.” Other event activities will<\/p>\n

include a style show,  an art show, live and silent auctions, and<\/p>\n

wagon rides along the Oregon Trail. The day will conclude with a dance<\/p>\n

featuring Karen Breiner and the Midnight Express. For people arriving a<\/p>\n

day early a 4-person scramble golf tournament will be held at the Lakeside<\/p>\n

Country Club near Johnson Lake on June 4.<\/p>\n

The Cattlemen’s Ball is held to promote beef in a healthy diet and to<\/p>\n

showcase rural Nebraska. All of the money raised will stay in Nebraska<\/p>\n

with 90 percent of the proceeds going toward research projects at the University<\/p>\n

of Nebraska Medical Center Eppley Cancer Center.  Last year’s ball<\/p>\n

raised $95,000 for cancer research in Nebraska. The remaining 10 percent<\/p>\n

will be directed to health care in the Lexington area.<\/p>\n

“The Cattlemen’s Ball has proven to be a significant resource for our<\/p>\n

fight against cancer here at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center,” said Margaret<\/p>\n

Tempero, interim director, UNMC Eppley Cancer Center.  “We are looking<\/p>\n

forward to this year’s event and the strides it will allow us take toward<\/p>\n

reaching our goals in cancer research.”<\/p>\n

Tickets are now on sale for two raffles to be held during the Cattlemen’s<\/p>\n

Ball. One raffle is for a new pick-up truck. The other is a race of plastic<\/p>\n

T-bone steaks down the Phelps Canal with winning participants receiving<\/p>\n

cash prizes. Winners need not be present to win. For raffle ticket information,<\/p>\n

Memorial arrangements are available for Cattlemen’s Ball guests who<\/p>\n

are cancer survivors or who would like to remember a loved one who died<\/p>\n

of cancer. Donors can purchase an artificial arrangement for $100. They<\/p>\n

will be displayed during the ball and can be taken home at the end of the<\/p>\n

Only 3,000 tickets will be sold to the 1999 Cattlemen’s Ball. Tickets<\/p>\n

The UNMC Eppley Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute designated<\/p>\n

cancer center — a distinction held by only 55 centers in the country.<\/p>\n

Of the $34.3 million in competitive, external research grants and contracts<\/p>\n

awarded to UNMC in 1997-98, cancer-related research accounted for about<\/p>\n

one-half of that amount.<\/p>\n

The UNMC Eppley Cancer Center was created in 1993 by the University<\/p>\n

of Nebraska Board of Regents in a move that united cancer researchers throughout<\/p>\n

the UNMC campus into a larger single entity. It marked a major first step<\/p>\n

toward Eppley’s quest to eventually become a comprehensive cancer treatment<\/p>\n

center, the most prestigious designation awarded by the NCI.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education and patient care, UNMC has<\/p>\n

established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for cancer research<\/p>\n

and treatment and solid organ transplantation. UNMC’s educational programs<\/p>\n
