 The University of Nebraska Medical Center Eppley Cancer Center<\/p>\n

has received more than $95,000 in proceeds from the 1998 Cattlemens Ball.<\/p>\n

Windmills Against the Sandhills Sky, was the theme for the first ball,<\/p>\n

which was held June 6 at the Graff\/Snover Ranch in Ainsworth. More than<\/p>\n

2,000 people attended the fundraising event and more than $114,000 was<\/p>\n

raised.<\/p>\n

The Cattlemens Ball is a perfect opportunity to raise money for cancer<\/p>\n

research. I think just about every family has been touched by cancer at<\/p>\n

some time, Sheryl Graff, owner of the Graff\/Snover Ranch, said. By supporting<\/p>\n

the Cattlemens Ball, we can all do something to support research that<\/p>\n

can make a difference.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Aug. 27 Graff presented a check to Margaret Tempero, M.D.,<\/p>\n

deputy director and interim director of the Cancer Center, at a luncheon<\/p>\n

held at the Omaha Womans Club. In addition, more than $13,000 was donated<\/p>\n

to the Ainsworth community for its hospital and ambulance services. The<\/p>\n

remaining proceeds will help support the 1999 Cattlemens Ball.<\/p>\n

  The Cattlemens Ball was a good example of how the community<\/p>\n

can come together to help fund cancer research efforts at our center,<\/p>\n

said Dr. Tempero. It was a fun and exciting event and we look forward<\/p>\n

to more of the same in the future.<\/p>\n

 The second annual Cattlemens Ball will be held on the Robb Ranch<\/p>\n

in Lexington, owned by Dr. and Mrs. Joe Jeffrey. The 1999 Cattlemens Ball<\/p>\n

will mark the 125th anniversary of the Robb Ranch. Tickets will be available<\/p>\n

after the first of the year. Anyone needing further information can contact<\/p>\n

Sheri Dunbar, assistant director of the Cancer Center, at (402) 559-4401.<\/p>\n

 The UNMC Eppley Cancer Center is one of more than 50 National<\/p>\n

Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers. Of the $27.2 million in research<\/p>\n

grants and contracts awarded to UNMC in 1996-1997, Eppley researchers generated<\/p>\n

more than $8 million.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education and patient care, UNMC has<\/p>\n

established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for cancer research<\/p>\n

and treatment and solid organ transplantation.  More than $27 million<\/p>\n

in research grants and contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually. <\/p>\n

In addition, UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution.<\/p>\n
