The chat will provide<br \/>\npatients, family members and caregivers an opportunity to ask questions<br \/>\nof experts.<\/p>\n<p>The hour-long question and answer session will address a variety of<br \/>\ntopics including: symptoms; the role of clinical trials in treatment; late<br \/>\neffects of lymphoma treatment; stem cell transplantation and other treatments;<br \/>\nnew drugs and drug combinations; and the role of gene therapy and vaccines<br \/>\nin the treatment of lymphoma.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the public can participate live or log on in advance and<br \/>\nsubmit questions ahead of time. A copy of the transcript of the chat in<br \/>\nits entirety will be available on the Web site following the chat.<\/p>\n<p>UNMC experts who will conduct the chat are: James O. Armitage, M.D.,<br \/>\nprofessor, UNMC Department of Internal Medicine and Joe Shapiro Distinguished<br \/>\nChair of Oncology; Lori J. Maness, M.D., assistant professor of medicine,<br \/>\nUNMC Department of Internal Medicine; and Stefano Tarantolo, M.D., associate<br \/>\nprofessor, UNMC Department of Internal Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>The cancer program of UNMC and its clinical partner, The Nebraska Medical<br \/>\nCenter, attracts patients from all over the world and is recognized as<br \/>\none the most successful and better known centers in the world, known particularly<br \/>\nfor its expertise in leukemias and lymphomas. About half the clinical and<br \/>\nbasic research grants awarded to UNMC are cancer-related. The team performs<br \/>\nmore transplants for lymphoma than most institutions in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Armitage is a fellow of both the American and Royal College of Physicians,<br \/>\na member of the National Cancer Advisory Board, and past president of both<br \/>\nthe American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Society of Blood<br \/>\nand Marrow Transplantation. He serves on the editorial boards of several<br \/>\npeer-reviewed journals, and has authored or coauthored hundreds of articles,<br \/>\nbook chapters, and abstracts.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Maness is an associate member of the American Society of Clinical<br \/>\nOncology and the American Society of Hematology. Her research interests<br \/>\ninclude developing protocols for the treatment of leukemia.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tarantolo is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, and<br \/>\na member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society<br \/>\nof Hematology, American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation, the<br \/>\nInternational Society of Experimental Hematology and the International<br \/>\nImmunocompromised Host Society.
