UNMC and Clarkson Merge Hospital and<\/p>\n

Clinical Operations with Formation of Nebraska Health System<\/b><\/p>\n

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents, during a special<\/p>\n

meeting Monday night in Lincoln, unanimously approved the<\/p>\n

proposed merger of hospital and clinical operations between the<\/p>\n

University of Nebraska Medical Center and Clarkson Regional<\/p>\n

Health Services.<\/p>\n

Effective Wednesday, the new health-care organization will be<\/p>\n

known as Nebraska Health System. Clarkson President and Chief<\/p>\n

Executive Officer Louis W. Burgher, M.D., Ph.D., has been<\/p>\n

selected as president and CEO for NHS.<\/p>\n

Regent approval was the final step in receiving the go-ahead<\/p>\n

for the merger, which originated from efforts by both<\/p>\n

organizations to resolve a legal dispute between Clarkson and the<\/p>\n

University of Nebraska.<\/p>\n

The Clarkson Hospital board of directors approved the merger<\/p>\n

at its regular monthly meeting Sept. 15.<\/p>\n

A signing ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, as<\/p>\n

employees from both institutions will gather on Dewey Avenue to<\/p>\n

witness the historic event. Following the signing ceremony,<\/p>\n

employees will enjoy a picnic lunch to commemorate the occasion.<\/p>\n

"The merger combines the efficiencies and experience of<\/p>\n

private practice with the innovations associated with academic<\/p>\n

medicine," said Dr. Burgher. "It is truly a combination<\/p>\n

of the best of both worlds in the medical arena."<\/p>\n

"This is an exciting time," said UNMC Chancellor<\/p>\n

William O. Berndt, Ph.D. "Employees from both organizations<\/p>\n

have the opportunity to participate in the development of a<\/p>\n

world-class organization. We have created a quality health-care<\/p>\n

system designed to meet people’s needs regardless of their age or<\/p>\n

the complexity of their health problem."<\/p>\n

Under terms of the merger, Dr. Burgher will be responsible for<\/p>\n

hospital administration and be the primary advocate for<\/p>\n

private-practice physicians. The academic and research functions<\/p>\n

of UNMC are not part of the merger, and the deans of the various<\/p>\n

UNMC colleges will have responsibility for all academic functions<\/p>\n

within NHS. <\/p>\n

"With this merger, we’ll see a new level of excellence of<\/p>\n

academic, patient care and research programs," said Harold<\/p>\n

M. Maurer, M.D., dean of the UNMC College of Medicine.<\/p>\n

"Students will receive the best possible education they can.<\/p>\n

The academic affiliation is the centerpiece of the merger. All<\/p>\n

UNMC’s academic programs are dependent on having a large volume<\/p>\n

of patients in the hospital and clinical settings. This merger<\/p>\n

will mean more patients for our students to see and thus enhance<\/p>\n

their educational experience."<\/p>\n

Some of the highlights of NHS include:<\/p>\n

–Nearly 600 physicians including representatives of every<\/p>\n

medical specialty;<\/p>\n

–More than 30 clinical sites in the Omaha-Council Bluffs<\/p>\n

area;<\/p>\n

–Local access to world-class specialized treatment such as<\/p>\n

organ transplantation, burn care and cancer therapies;<\/p>\n

–Specialty physicians providing medical services to patients<\/p>\n

in more than 50 hospitals in the region;<\/p>\n

–Greater access to health-care providers through an expanded<\/p>\n

list of insurance plans.<\/p>\n

"Both UNMC and Clarkson have strong traditions of<\/p>\n

providing care to the people in our region," said L. Dennis<\/p>\n

Smith, Ph.D., president of the University of Nebraska. "This<\/p>\n

history of outreach will only be enhanced. The combination of<\/p>\n

resources from two neighboring institutions — space, personnel,<\/p>\n

equipment and financial strength — will position both<\/p>\n

institutions to compete more effectively in today’s health care<\/p>\n

environment."<\/p>\n

Bruce Lauritzen, chairman of the Clarkson Regional Health<\/p>\n

Services board of directors and president of First National Bank<\/p>\n

of Omaha, said, "By merging, two strong health-care<\/p>\n

organizations become even stronger."<\/p>\n

A 12-member board — with equal representation from Clarkson<\/p>\n

and UNMC — has been selected to lead NHS. In addition, Dr.<\/p>\n

Burgher and Dr. Maurer will serve as non-voting members of the<\/p>\n

board.<\/p>\n

Representing UNMC on the board are: James Armitage, M.D.,<\/p>\n

chairman and regents professor of the UNMC internal medicine<\/p>\n

department; Dr. Berndt; James Massey, Scottsbluff, past president<\/p>\n

of J.G. Elliott Co., an independent insurance agency, who has<\/p>\n

served on the UNMC Board of Counselors; Harlan Noddle, Omaha,<\/p>\n

chairman of Noddle Development Co. and chairman of the University<\/p>\n

Hospital Board of Governors; Lt. Gov. Kim Robak; and Jan Thayer,<\/p>\n

Grand Island, owner and manager of nursing homes and a consulting<\/p>\n

agency.<\/p>\n

Representing Clarkson on the board are: Mogens Bay, president<\/p>\n

and CEO of Valmont Industries; Timothy Kingston, M.D., a partner<\/p>\n

in Surgical Services of the the Great Plains, a Clarkson board<\/p>\n

member and past president of the Clarkson medical staff;<\/p>\n

Lauritzen; Kenneth Stinson, president and chairman of Kiewit<\/p>\n

Construction Group, Inc., and a Clarkson board member; Lewis<\/p>\n

Trowbridge, president of Mammel & Associates, Inc., a<\/p>\n

Clarkson board member and Clarkson College board member; and a<\/p>\n

member to be announced later.<\/p>\n

"This is a win-win situation for both institutions and<\/p>\n

the state of Nebraska," said John Payne, chairman of the<\/p>\n

University of Nebraska Board of Regents. "Together, these<\/p>\n

organizations can do more than they could do alone."<\/p>\n

Clarkson Regional Health Services includes a 401-bed hospital,<\/p>\n

18 clinical sites and a 275-member medical staff. Clarkson has<\/p>\n

1,409 full-time, 349 part-time and 300 casual labor employees.<\/p>\n

UNMC includes the 434-bed University Hospital, 13 clinical<\/p>\n

sites and a 306-member physician group. UNMC has 6,231 employees,<\/p>\n

including 2,837 in the hospital and clinics.<\/p>\n
