The Panhandle Community Services of Gering has received a three-year,<\/p>\n

$221,690 grant from the  Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services<\/p>\n

System Nebraska Healthcare Cash Fund (tobacco settlement fund) which has<\/p>\n

allowed the University of Nebraska Medical Center to expand its dental<\/p>\n

hygiene program in western Nebraska.<\/p>\n

PCS, located in Gering, has subcontracted with the University of Nebraska<\/p>\n

Medical Center College of Dentistry, which is located in Lincoln, to make<\/p>\n

its dental hygiene program accessible in Western Nebraska. The first students<\/p>\n

began classes in August.<\/p>\n

The UNMC College of Dentistrys dental hygiene program is a two-year<\/p>\n

program upon which students earn a bachelors degree in dental hygiene.<\/p>\n

Students enter the dental hygiene program with two years of undergraduate<\/p>\n

prerequisite courses.<\/p>\n

Dental hygienists are licensed oral health professionals whose focus<\/p>\n

is preventing and treating oral diseases. Dental hygienists perform oral<\/p>\n

health care assessments, expose, process, and interpret dental X-rays,<\/p>\n

remove plaque and tartar, apply cavity-preventive agents such as fluorides<\/p>\n

and sealants and teach proper oral hygiene.<\/p>\n

Dental hygiene students will attend class at PCS and use distance learning<\/p>\n

technology to access Lincoln classes. They will share student services<\/p>\n

with nursing students at the UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division<\/p>\n

in Scottsbluff. Dental hygiene students will perform clinical skills in<\/p>\n

the dental facilities at PCS.<\/p>\n

Were very excited about the partnership with the College of Dentistry<\/p>\n

for a variety of reasons, said Margo Hartman, deputy director of PCS.<\/p>\n

Over the past year we have updated our needs assessment.  During<\/p>\n

that process people indicated that access to dental care was a need throughout<\/p>\n

the panhandle. Its an opportunity for those who want to become dental<\/p>\n

hygienists to live here and not have to move to Lincoln to go to school<\/p>\n

to become a dental hygienist.<\/p>\n

PCS recently has expanded its facilities and plans to have four dental<\/p>\n

patient care rooms where students will learn clinical hygiene skills with<\/p>\n

patients at PCS.<\/p>\n

We see this opportunity as positive economic development. And after<\/p>\n

graduation, students can find good paying jobs with which they can support<\/p>\n

themselves and their families, Hartman said. We serve children and adults<\/p>\n

in our community and surrounding areas whom may not get dental care otherwise.<\/p>\n

The addition of students in our facility will enable us to help more children<\/p>\n

and adults, as well as free dentists to do more dental care.<\/p>\n

George Schlothauer, D.D.S., an area private practice dentist who serves<\/p>\n

on the PCS Health Committee, is looking forward to the partnership. There<\/p>\n

are nothing but pluses for the establishment of the hygiene program here<\/p>\n

in Gering. Being in western Nebraska so far from the college is especially<\/p>\n

hard to get young trained dental hygienists to return. Quite often they<\/p>\n

get married and then it is very difficult for both to find employment in<\/p>\n

a rural setting.<\/p>\n

Our hope is that if we train the students here, they more than likely<\/p>\n

will elect to stay either here or locate nearby. As individuals like me<\/p>\n

get closer to retiring, there will be a great demand for both dentists<\/p>\n

and hygienists, Dr. Schlothauer said. We are very fortunate to have the<\/p>\n

facility that we have at PCS and an abundance of patients that need hygiene<\/p>\n

services. I am very excited about the program and I think it will be a<\/p>\n

program that we can all be proud of.<\/p>\n

John Reinhardt, D.D.S., dean of the UNMC College of Dentistry, said<\/p>\n

the college has tried for a decade to increase the pool of students in<\/p>\n

the western part of the state. There is a big shortage of dental hygienists<\/p>\n

in western Nebraska, from Grand Island west, he said. We are taking the<\/p>\n

program to the students in hopes we can encourage them to graduate and<\/p>\n

practice in the shortage areas. Weve been hoping for this program for<\/p>\n

more than a decade. But we didnt get it funded until now. We were just<\/p>\n

waiting for the opportunity.<\/p>\n

The college has hired a faculty member, Todd Junge, a graduate of the<\/p>\n

UNMC dental hygiene program, said Gwen Hlava, chair of the Department of<\/p>\n

Dental Hygiene, UNMC College of Dentistry.<\/p>\n

David Brown, Ph.D., executive associate dean, UNMC College of Dentistry<\/p>\n

and professor of oral biology, said students who enroll will learn the<\/p>\n

same academics and clinical program as their colleagues. The only difference<\/p>\n

will be in the classroom where students will see and communicate with faculty<\/p>\n

and fellow students in Lincoln in real time, live via satellite or internet<\/p>\n

communications.<\/p>\n

This is simply an extension of our program, Dr. Brown said. Its<\/p>\n

exactly the same program  except that the students will be in the<\/p>\n

Scottsbluff\/Gering area. All of the academic instruction will come from<\/p>\n

Lincoln. The intent is to draw students from western Nebraska who are interested<\/p>\n

in building a dental hygiene practice in their home area.<\/p>\n

Dr. Brown said he expects to see traditional as well as non-traditional<\/p>\n

students who are changing careers. The more hygienists we can have in<\/p>\n

underserved areas, the better, he said. In Nebraska, we have a problem<\/p>\n

of access to oral health care. There really is a health care crisis in<\/p>\n

dentistry in the western part of the state.<\/p>\n

Drs. Reinhardt and Brown credit PCS with making this program possible<\/p>\n

in the local area.<\/p>\n

PCS is a non-profit community-based organization that serves low-income<\/p>\n

and disadvantaged people, and those unable to meet their needs through<\/p>\n

other sources.<\/p>\n

The mission of the UNMC College of Dentistry is to educate dental health<\/p>\n

professionals and to improve the health of the citizens of Nebraska through<\/p>\n

excellence in research, patient care and outreach. The college serves Nebraska<\/p>\n

students and those in states that have no dental schools, including Kansas,<\/p>\n

South Dakota and Wyoming. For six of the last nine years, the colleges<\/p>\n

freshman class has ranked first among the 55 U.S. dental schools for incoming<\/p>\n

grade-point average. The college offers programs in doctor of dental surgery<\/p>\n

(D.D.S.), bachelors degree in dental hygiene, a general practice residency<\/p>\n

program and post-graduate specialty programs in endodontics, orthodontics,<\/p>\n

periodontics, and pediatric dentistry.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public health science center in the state. Its educational<\/p>\n

programs are responsible for training more health professionals practicing<\/p>\n

in Nebraska than any other institution. Through its commitment to education, <\/p>\n

research, patient care and outreach, UNMC has established itself as one<\/p>\n

of the country’s leading centers in cancer, transplantation biology, bioterrorism<\/p>\n

preparedness, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, genetics,<\/p>\n

biomedical technology and arthritis. In the past year, UNMCs research<\/p>\n

funding from external sources increased by 23 percent and now exceeds $50<\/p>\n

million annually. In that same period, federal funding increased by 36<\/p>\n

percent and now exceeds $34 million.<\/p>\n
