OMAHA Two University of Nebraska campuses have joined forces to help<\/p>\n

Nebraska communities achieve optimal health and well-being.<\/p>\n

The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and the University<\/p>\n

of Nebraska at Omaha (UNOmaha) have launched the Collaborating Center for<\/p>\n

Public Health and Community Service.<\/p>\n

Located at 115 S. 49th Ave. in Omaha, the center is designed to promote<\/p>\n

the health and development of Nebraskas populations and communities through<\/p>\n

campus-community collaboration in education, training and service, said<\/p>\n

B.J. Reed, dean of UNOmahas College of Public Affairs and Community Service.<\/p>\n

It serves as home base for a number of small, community-based organizations<\/p>\n

and projects whose collective long-term goal is optimal community well-being.<\/p>\n

The center is based on a small business incubator model, Reed said. <\/p>\n

The co-location of multiple programs allows them to achieve an economy<\/p>\n

of scale to support their basic infrastructure needs, including: affordable,<\/p>\n

accessible office and meeting space; telecommunications and computing services;<\/p>\n

and basic administrative support.<\/p>\n

It combines a strategic mix of university and community-led activities<\/p>\n

that enhance one another when their small staffs are housed together,<\/p>\n

said Magda Peck, associate chairman of pediatrics at UNMC. With its open<\/p>\n

office environment and meeting space, the center is designed to reflect<\/p>\n

the principles of communication and collaboration.  It promotes a<\/p>\n

neighborhood atmosphere that relies on shared resources and peer exchange.<\/p>\n

The facility, which opened in December, is located in Omahas historic<\/p>\n

Dundee neighborhood halfway between the two campuses.  It is owned<\/p>\n

and managed by Holland Basham Architects, which occupies the adjacent main<\/p>\n

building.  Non-university occupants are nonprofit organizations that<\/p>\n

sublease space from UNMC for two-year periods.<\/p>\n

The centers occupants have access to a shared telephone system and<\/p>\n

fax, university-supported computing systems and the Internet, photocopying<\/p>\n

and meeting space, Reed said.  Other features include: a shared first-floor<\/p>\n

receptionist who provides general secretarial support at cost; a community<\/p>\n

conference room that accommodates up to 25 people and soon will be equipped<\/p>\n

for teleconferencing; flexible, central space that can be used for larger<\/p>\n

community meetings; and a project development room equipped with computers<\/p>\n

that can be used for smaller meetings where intensive collaborative work<\/p>\n

is necessary.<\/p>\n

A second-floor community health reference room also is available at<\/p>\n

CityMatCH, a national public health practice and research organization<\/p>\n

based in the center, Peck said. Future plans for the center include a neighborhood<\/p>\n

and community development resource library.<\/p>\n

The Collaborating Center for Public Health and Community Service is<\/p>\n

currently home to the following campus programs and community organizations:<\/p>\n

– UNMC Department of Pediatrics\/Section on Child Health Policy<\/p>\n

– UNOmaha Public Administrations Community Service Program<\/p>\n

– UNOmaha Public Administrations Municipal Clerk School<\/p>\n

– CityMatCH<\/p>\n

– Nebraska Educational Alliance for Public Health Impact<\/p>\n

– Our Healthy Community Partnership (central offices)<\/p>\n

– Nebraska Minority Public Health Association\/Tobacco-Free Communities<\/p>\n

of Color Project<\/p>\n

– Neighborhood Builders<\/p>\n

– Omahas Weed and Seed Strategy<\/p>\n
