The University of Nebraska Medical Center announced today that funding<\/p>\n

is complete for the $1 million Charlotte Peck Lienemann and Alumni Distinguished<\/p>\n

Chair in Nursing. The chair enhances the UNMC College of Nursings ability<\/p>\n

to attract and retain a prominent nursing scholar. In addition, the fund<\/p>\n

provides support for the research and educational activities of the chair<\/p>\n

recipient.<\/p>\n

We are extremely excited about this endowed faculty position and the<\/p>\n

opportunities it holds for the College of Nursing, said Ada M. Lindsey,<\/p>\n

Ph.D., dean of the UNMC College of Nursing. This fund provides us with<\/p>\n

the means to attract an outstanding faculty member to assist us in providing<\/p>\n

excellence in education and research. The many donors to this endowment<\/p>\n

show a clear and strong commitment to nursing. The leadership and generosity<\/p>\n

of the alumni and friends who have contributed to this chair illustrates<\/p>\n

their pride in the College of Nursing and its students.<\/p>\n

The UNMC College of Nursing Alumni Association began the funding initiative<\/p>\n

for the chair in 1989.  The fund received a large boost in 1996 when<\/p>\n

the Lienemann Family Charitable Foundation and The Ethel S. Abbott Charitable<\/p>\n

Foundation made a combined gift of $200,000 to support it. That same year,<\/p>\n

the Alumni Association Board of Directors approved the renaming of the<\/p>\n

endowed chair to recognize this gift made in honor of Charlotte Peck Lienemann,<\/p>\n

a 1945 College of Nursing graduate. A chair recipient will be announced<\/p>\n

following a national search.<\/p>\n

My wife was an inspiration to those she served through nursing, said<\/p>\n

Del Lienemann, Sr., president and manager of The Ethel S. Abbott Charitable<\/p>\n

Foundation and husband of the late Charlotte Peck Lienemann.  Nursing<\/p>\n

is a valiant profession that gets to the heart of helping others. We are<\/p>\n

pleased to help UNMC in its efforts to attract a top quality instructor<\/p>\n

to better prepare nurses for the important job that lies ahead of them.<\/p>\n

Lienemann, of Lincoln, again pledged his assistance for the fund in<\/p>\n

1997 at the colleges 80th anniversary celebration.  The chair had<\/p>\n

surpassed the $500,000 interim endowment goal established by the Alumni<\/p>\n

Association, leaving a remaining $500,000 to be funded. Lienemann pledged<\/p>\n

a $250,000 gift, challenging the College of Nursing to raise the remaining<\/p>\n

$250,000 by Dec. 31, 1999 to fully fund the chair. Over 1,000 alumni, faculty,<\/p>\n

staff, friends and foundations contributed gifts and pledges, fully funding<\/p>\n

the $1 million chair.<\/p>\n

The support shown to UNMC by the Lienemann Family Charitable Foundation<\/p>\n

and The Ethel S. Abbott Charitable Foundation as well as the many alumni<\/p>\n

and friends who contributed to this fund is spectacular, said Harold M.<\/p>\n

Maurer, M.D., chancellor of UNMC. The College of Nursing is an outstanding<\/p>\n

institution and this new faculty position furthers UNMCs commitment to<\/p>\n

a quality education. We are grateful for the opportunity to expand our<\/p>\n

research and teaching efforts.<\/p>\n

The University of Nebraska Foundation is a non-profit corporation supplementing<\/p>\n

support for students, faculty, facilities and programs at the University<\/p>\n

of Nebraskas four campuses through gifts from alumni, friends, corporations<\/p>\n

and other foundations.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education, outreach and patient care,<\/p>\n

UNMC has established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for<\/p>\n

cancer research and treatment, solid organ transplantation and arthritis.<\/p>\n

Nearly $32 million in research grants and contracts were awarded to UNMC<\/p>\n

scientists during the past fiscal year. In addition, UNMCs educational<\/p>\n

programs are responsible for training more health professionals practicing<\/p>\n

in Nebraska than any other institution.<\/p>\n
