{"id":47175,"date":"2002-05-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2002-05-23T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2002\/05\/23\/undergraduate-students-participate-in-unmc-culturalcompetency-workshop\/"},"modified":"2022-08-29T10:48:01","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T15:48:01","slug":"undergraduate-students-participate-in-unmc-culturalcompetency-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unmc.edu\/newsroom\/2002\/05\/23\/undergraduate-students-participate-in-unmc-culturalcompetency-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Undergraduate students participate in UNMC Cultural\n\nCompetency Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"panel body-content\"><div class=\"panel__container\"><p>Fifteen undergraduate students took part in the second Cultural Competency<\/p>\n<p>Workshop May 19-23 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.<\/p>\n<p>Students from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the University of Nebraska<\/p>\n<p>at Kearney, Wayne State College, Hastings College and Midland Lutheran<\/p>\n<p>College attended the workshop, which was coordinated by the UNMC Rural<\/p>\n<p>Health Education Network.<\/p>\n<p>During the workshop, students were familiarized with the cultural differences<\/p>\n<p>of Nebraskas growing diverse population. Students learned about cultural<\/p>\n<p>differences and similarities; studied factors that determine health disparities;<\/p>\n<p>completed research projects; shadowed professionals in underserved areas;<\/p>\n<p>conducted mock patient interviews; and worked on sensitivity training.<\/p>\n<p>Upon completion of a 20-hour practicum at an underserved clinic, the students<\/p>\n<p>will receive credit for one hour of study at their respective university<\/p>\n<p>or college.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the students from rural Nebraska arent exposed to cultures<\/p>\n<p>other than their own, so their understanding and comfort level with people<\/p>\n<p>who may not look or talk like them is not at an optimal level, said Roxanna<\/p>\n<p>Jokela, director of RHEN. The Cultural Competency Workshop provides an<\/p>\n<p>opportunity for these students to begin to gain an understanding of Latino,<\/p>\n<p>Asian, Native American, African-American and other cultures.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop was funded in part through the Nebraska Health Care Cash<\/p>\n<p>Fund. Those funds come through the states settlement with tobacco companies<\/p>\n<p>and are awarded on a competitive basis.
