Twenty dental and dental hygiene students from the University of Nebraska<\/p>\n

Medical Center College of Dentistry will receive honor awards for the 1998-99<\/p>\n

school year. The recipients were chosen by the faculty based on their academic<\/p>\n

performance. The awards will be given during commencement ceromonies at<\/p>\n

2 p.m. on Friday, May 7, at the Lied Center for Performing Arts, 301 N.<\/p>\n

12th St., Lincoln. Award winners are listed below by hometowns:<\/p>\n

Since 1990, UNMC’s freshman dental classes have ranked in the top 10<\/p>\n

for the highest grade point averages among the 55 dental colleges in the<\/p>\n

United States. UNMC’s dental college, located at 40th and Holdrege in Lincoln,<\/p>\n

includes about 250 students enrolled in the following educational programs:<\/p>\n

doctor of dental surgery (D.D.S.); certificate in dental hygiene and<\/p>\n

a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene; five post-graduate specialty programs<\/p>\n

in endodontics, orthodontics, periodontics, pediatric dentistry, and prosthodontics;<\/p>\n

and two general dentistry residency programs.<\/p>\n

The UNMC College of Dentistry was founded in 1899 as the Lincoln Dental<\/p>\n

College and officially became part of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln<\/p>\n

in 1918. In 1979, it became part of UNMC. Construction was recently completed<\/p>\n

on the Cruzan Center for Research, a 7,000 square foot addition which is<\/p>\n

home to a new state-of the art lecture hall and clinical research operatories.<\/p>\n

An additional 8,000 square feet of the college’s existing space was renovated<\/p>\n

to allow for more research space.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education and patient care, UNMC has<\/p>\n

established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for cancer research<\/p>\n

and treatment and solid organ transplantation. More than $34 million in<\/p>\n

research grants and contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually.<\/p>\n

In addition, UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n
