 Mental health professionals from the Nebraska Psychiatric Society<\/p>\n

and the Creighton-University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Psychiatry<\/p>\n

will offer local residents the opportunity to learn about the signs and<\/p>\n

symptoms of depression and manic-depression, and to participate in a free<\/p>\n

screening as part of National Depression Screening Day on Thursday, Oct.<\/p>\n

8, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the University Geriatrics Center, 45th and Emile<\/p>\n

streets.<\/p>\n

 Mental health professionals will speak about the causes, symptoms<\/p>\n

and treatments of depression and manic-depression, followed by a short<\/p>\n

video. Individuals will then fill out an anonymous written screening test<\/p>\n

for depression and will be able to speak to a professional about their<\/p>\n

results.<\/p>\n

 The National Institutes of Mental Health reports that depression<\/p>\n

and manic depression strike more than 17 million Americans each year. Fewer<\/p>\n

than half of the17 million actually seek treatment, even though it can<\/p>\n

help 80 to 90 percent of those affected.<\/p>\n


 Common symptoms of depression include feelings of hopelessness,<\/p>\n

worthlessness, restlessness and irritability, changes in sleep and appetite,<\/p>\n

loss of energy and thoughts of death or suicide. Manic depression includes<\/p>\n

feelings of euphoria or agitation.<\/p>\n

 The Nebraska Psychiatric Society and the Creighton\/UNMC Department<\/p>\n

of Psychiatry are sponsoring the event.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education and patient care, UNMC has<\/p>\n

established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for cancer research<\/p>\n

and treatment and solid organ transplantation. More than $34 million in<\/p>\n

research grants and contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually.<\/p>\n

In addition, UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution.<\/p>\n
