The forum will address what&#8217;s new in<br \/>\ndiabetes care, including the new criteria for diagnosing<br \/>\ndiabetes, medications, monitoring devices, nutrition, exercise<br \/>\nand the relationship between good glucose control and prevention<br \/>\nof complications.<\/p>\n<p>Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or<br \/>\nproperly use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar,<br \/>\nstarches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The<br \/>\ncause of diabetes is a mystery, although both genetics and<br \/>\nenvironmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise may<br \/>\nplay a role. Diabetes is a chronic disease that has no cure.<\/p>\n<p>Of the estimated 95,000 people in Nebraska and 16 million<br \/>\npeople in the United States who have diabetes, only half know<br \/>\nthey have the disease. This year, diabetes, the fourth-leading<br \/>\ncause of death by disease in the United States, will take the<br \/>\nlives of more than 178,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>Staff from the University Diabetes Center who will present the<br \/>\nforum include: Peg Struebing, physician assistant; Maxine<br \/>\nMcElligott; registered dietician; and Tim Ford, exercise<br \/>\nphysiologist.<\/p>\n<p>The center, founded in 1995, is a multidiscipinary diabetes<br \/>\nresource that integrates patient care, education and research to<br \/>\nimprove the treatment and management of the disease. It consists<br \/>\nof pediatric and adult endocrinologists, nurse diabetes<br \/>\neducators, an exercise physiologist, dietitians, an insulin pump<br \/>\nspecialist, social workers, psychologists, podiatrists and a host<br \/>\nof affiliated specialists interested in diabetes care and<br \/>\nresearchers interested in solving diabetes problems.<\/p>\n<p>Seating at the forum is limited. Those interested in attending<br \/>\nshould call 559-2400.<\/p>\n<p>UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the<br \/>\nstate. Through its commitment to research, education and patient<br \/>\ncare, UNMC has established itself as one of the country&#8217;s leading<br \/>\ncenters for cancer research and treatment and solid organ<br \/>\ntransplantation. Nearly $25 million in research grants and<br \/>\ncontracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually.
