Charles Enke, M.D., medical director of radiation oncology at<\/p>\n

Clarkson Hospital, has been appointed chairman of the department<\/p>\n

of radiation oncology in the University of Nebraska Medical<\/p>\n

Center College of Medicine and will serve as medical director for<\/p>\n

the Nebraska Health System (NHS). NHS is the combined hospital<\/p>\n

and clinical operation formed by the recent merger of Clarkson<\/p>\n

Hospital and University Hospital. With the formation of NHS,<\/p>\n

radiation oncology services at Clarkson Hospital and University<\/p>\n

Hospital were merged.<\/p>\n

The appointment was announced by Harold M. Maurer, M.D., dean,<\/p>\n

College of Medicine. Dr. Enke also has been appointed associate<\/p>\n

professor at UNMC. "For the first time since it was created<\/p>\n

in 1994, the department is chaired by a full-time radiation<\/p>\n

oncologist," Dr. Maurer said. <\/p>\n

"With this appointment comes the opportunity for UNMC and<\/p>\n

NHS to build together a leading radiation oncology department in<\/p>\n

the Midwest, especially through integration into the University<\/p>\n

Treatment Center and Clinic’s overall research and education<\/p>\n

missions," Dr. Maurer said.<\/p>\n

Joining Dr. Enke on the department’s medical staff will<\/p>\n

be Robert Thompson, M.D., and Ronald McGarry, M.D., Ph.D. Drs.<\/p>\n

Thompson and Enke have alternatively served as medical director<\/p>\n

of Clarkson’s radiation oncology department. Members of the<\/p>\n

medical staff are now, or will become, members of University<\/p>\n

Medical Associates, the UNMC physician group. Plans are under way<\/p>\n

to recruit another academic radiation oncologist this year, Dr.<\/p>\n

Enke said. <\/p>\n

Physically expanding the department is one priority this year,<\/p>\n

he said. Approval was granted to build a third treatment room at<\/p>\n

Clarkson and equip it with a state-of-the-art linear accelerator.<\/p>\n

"It will expand the intraoperative radiation therapy<\/p>\n

program that was part of UNMC, and will improve and support<\/p>\n

UNMC’s bone marrow transplant program by providing a<\/p>\n

dedicated facility for total body irradiation procedures,"<\/p>\n

Dr. Enke said.<\/p>\n

The third room is expected to be operational in the fall 1998.<\/p>\n

Until this new room and the connector between Clarkson and<\/p>\n

University Hospitals are built, radiation oncology services will<\/p>\n

continue to be provided at both facilities, he said. Once these<\/p>\n

projects are complete, all radiation oncology services for NHS<\/p>\n

will be provided at Clarkson. It is expected the department will<\/p>\n

service 60 to 70 patients a day, he said.<\/p>\n

Combining services in one location will have several benefits<\/p>\n

patients, Dr. Enke said. <\/p>\n

"The department combines areas of expertise into one<\/p>\n

area. Patients will have access to investigative protocols<\/p>\n

available through either hospital. Patients receiving outpatient<\/p>\n

treatments will find parking more convenient. There also is a<\/p>\n

significant cost savings of $8 to $10 million by utilizing the<\/p>\n

facility at Clarkson rather than building a new facility at UNMC.<\/p>\n

"We look forward to developing working relationships with<\/p>\n

the clinicians and staff involved with the leukemia\/lymphoma<\/p>\n

program at UNMC," he said, noting that the department is<\/p>\n

already developing modality protocols for small cell lung<\/p>\n

carcinoma and malignant brain tumors. "The ability to<\/p>\n

interact with so many oncologic experts is exciting," he<\/p>\n

said.<\/p>\n

Dr. Enke is not new to UNMC. He and his colleagues at Clarkson<\/p>\n

have treated patients on a contractual basis at University<\/p>\n

Hospital, taught UNMC students and residents and participated in<\/p>\n

cooperative cancer group research protocol activities for several<\/p>\n

years.<\/p>\n

He received his medical degree from the University of Iowa in<\/p>\n

Iowa City in 1985. He then completed his internship and residency<\/p>\n

at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals in<\/p>\n

Milwaukee. During that time Dr. Enke also was awarded a clinical<\/p>\n

oncology fellowship from the American Cancer Society.<\/p>\n

From 1989 to 1992, he served as medical director of radiation<\/p>\n

therapy in the Cancer Treatment Center at St. Francis Hospital in<\/p>\n

Grand Island. Dr. Enke then served as medical director of<\/p>\n

radiation oncology at Clarkson from 1992 to 1994, and then again<\/p>\n

in 1996. <\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the<\/p>\n

state. Through its commitment to research, education and patient<\/p>\n

care, UNMC has established itself as one of the country’s leading<\/p>\n

centers for cancer research and treatment and solid organ<\/p>\n

transplantation. Nearly $25 million in research grants and<\/p>\n

contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually. In addition,<\/p>\n

UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other<\/p>\n
