<\/FONT><\/B><\/P><\/p>\n

Not too long ago, only 38 percent of patients diagnosed with cancer
\nsurvived. Today, however, more than half of all cancer patients will survive.
\nFrom 1991 to 1995, the overall cancer death rate in the United States dropped
\nnearly 3 percent, the first sustained decline since national record keeping
\nbegan in the 1930s. <\/P><\/p>\n

Researchers at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center at the University of Nebraska
\nMedical Center campus and at other cancer centers designated by the National
\nCancer Institute (NCI) across the country have been responsible for many
\nof the advancements made in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of
\nthis disease. <\/P><\/p>\n

To help celebrate the strides being made with cancer, a free public
\neducation forum featuring four leading cancer experts will be held in Omahan
\nThursday, May 22, and sent via satellite to nine other Nebraska communities.
\nThe forum is sponsored by the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center and is called "Pathways
\nof Progress in Cancer." It will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m., CDT (6
\nto 7:30 p.m., MDT) at the UNMC College of Nursing’s Cooper Auditorium at
\n42nd Street and Dewey Avenue. <\/P><\/p>\n

The forum will be broadcast live via satellite to: Lincoln, Norfolk,
\nGrand Island, Kearney, McCook, North Platte, Scottsbluff, Alliance and
\nChadron. The forum will open with a videotaped message from Nebraska Sen.
\nBob Kerrey. <\/P><\/p>\n

Speakers will include: two former directors of the Eppley Institute
\nfor Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases — Henry Lemon, M.D., the first
\ndirector of the Eppley Institute and professor emeritus of UNMC’s department
\nof internal medicine, and Edward Bresnick, Ph.D., the fourth director of
\nthe Eppley Institute and currently vice chancellor for research at the
\nUniversity of Massachusetts Medical Center; Raymond Ruddon, M.D., Ph.D.,
\nthe current director of the Eppley Institute and of the UNMC Eppley Cancer
\nCenter and the Eppley Professor of Oncology; and James Armitage, M.D.,
\npresident of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists and chairman
\nof UNMC’s department of internal medicine. <\/P><\/p>\n

Dr. Armitage founded UNMC’s bone marrow transplant program and is considered
\none of the world’s foremost experts in the treatment of lymphoma. At the
\nforum, participants will learn how far cancer research and treatment have
\ncome in the past 25 years; where some of the new and promising research
\nis headed; and the critical need for government and private support for
\nresearch in this field. <\/P><\/p>\n

"The passage of the National Cancer Act in 1971 infused federal
\nresources into the battle against cancer and created NCI-designated cancer
\ncenters to concentrate on this area of research," said Dr. Ruddon.
\n<\/P><\/p>\n

"That act provided the impetus to propel cancer research to its
\ncurrent level. In recognition of that important event, we’re excited to
\nhelp highlight the progress that has been made during these past 25 years
\nand to offer some insight into the new frontiers for cancer prevention,
\ndiagnosis and care." Dr. Ruddon said strides are being made in studying
\ncancer on the molecular level and in the identification of genes that are
\nresponsible for cancer. <\/P><\/p>\n

In addition to finding the genes associated with certain kinds of cancer,
\nscientists are studying how to manipulate and correct defective genes and
\nhow to harness the body’s own defenses to fight this disease. The forum
