Today, however, more than half of all cancer patients will survive.<br \/>\nFrom 1991 to 1995, the overall cancer death rate in the United States dropped<br \/>\nnearly 3 percent, the first sustained decline since national record keeping<br \/>\nbegan in the 1930s. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Researchers at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center at the University of Nebraska<br \/>\nMedical Center campus and at other cancer centers designated by the National<br \/>\nCancer Institute (NCI) across the country have been responsible for many<br \/>\nof the advancements made in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of<br \/>\nthis disease. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>To help celebrate the strides being made with cancer, a free public<br \/>\neducation forum featuring four leading cancer experts will be held in Omahan<br \/>\nThursday, May 22, and sent via satellite to nine other Nebraska communities.<br \/>\nThe forum is sponsored by the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center and is called &quot;Pathways<br \/>\nof Progress in Cancer.&quot; It will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m., CDT (6<br \/>\nto 7:30 p.m., MDT) at the UNMC College of Nursing&#8217;s Cooper Auditorium at<br \/>\n42nd Street and Dewey Avenue. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The forum will be broadcast live via satellite to: Lincoln, Norfolk,<br \/>\nGrand Island, Kearney, McCook, North Platte, Scottsbluff, Alliance and<br \/>\nChadron. The forum will open with a videotaped message from Nebraska Sen.<br \/>\nBob Kerrey. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Speakers will include: two former directors of the Eppley Institute<br \/>\nfor Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases &#8212; Henry Lemon, M.D., the first<br \/>\ndirector of the Eppley Institute and professor emeritus of UNMC&#8217;s department<br \/>\nof internal medicine, and Edward Bresnick, Ph.D., the fourth director of<br \/>\nthe Eppley Institute and currently vice chancellor for research at the<br \/>\nUniversity of Massachusetts Medical Center; Raymond Ruddon, M.D., Ph.D.,<br \/>\nthe current director of the Eppley Institute and of the UNMC Eppley Cancer<br \/>\nCenter and the Eppley Professor of Oncology; and James Armitage, M.D.,<br \/>\npresident of the American Society of Clinical Oncologists and chairman<br \/>\nof UNMC&#8217;s department of internal medicine. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Dr. Armitage founded UNMC&#8217;s bone marrow transplant program and is considered<br \/>\none of the world&#8217;s foremost experts in the treatment of lymphoma. At the<br \/>\nforum, participants will learn how far cancer research and treatment have<br \/>\ncome in the past 25 years; where some of the new and promising research<br \/>\nis headed; and the critical need for government and private support for<br \/>\nresearch in this field. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&quot;The passage of the National Cancer Act in 1971 infused federal<br \/>\nresources into the battle against cancer and created NCI-designated cancer<br \/>\ncenters to concentrate on this area of research,&quot; said Dr. Ruddon.<br \/>\n<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>&quot;That act provided the impetus to propel cancer research to its<br \/>\ncurrent level. In recognition of that important event, we&#8217;re excited to<br \/>\nhelp highlight the progress that has been made during these past 25 years<br \/>\nand to offer some insight into the new frontiers for cancer prevention,<br \/>\ndiagnosis and care.&quot; Dr. Ruddon said strides are being made in studying<br \/>\ncancer on the molecular level and in the identification of genes that are<br \/>\nresponsible for cancer. <\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>In addition to finding the genes associated with certain kinds of cancer,<br \/>\nscientists are studying how to manipulate and correct defective genes and<br \/>\nhow to harness the body&#8217;s own defenses to fight this disease. The forum<br \/>\nis free and open to the public.
