<\/FONT><\/B><\/p>\n

 The University of Nebraska Medical Center has named Dean Flechs<\/p>\n

director of the Office of Student Equity and Multicultural Affairs (OSEMA),<\/p>\n

which was established last May within the UNMC Division of Student Services<\/p>\n

to create and maintain a broadly diverse student body.<\/p>\n

Flechs, who began his duties Oct. 1, is an enrolled member of the Cherokee<\/p>\n

Nation of Oklahoma.<\/p>\n

He received his bachelors degree in anthropology with a minor in American<\/p>\n

Indian Studies from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1983, and<\/p>\n

his masters degree in modern languages and literatures from UNL in 1991.<\/p>\n

He was a Fulbright Scholar in the Federal Republic of Germany during<\/p>\n

1987-88 and taught conversational English to students in a German college<\/p>\n

preparatory school.<\/p>\n

Flechs has eight years of admissions experience in higher education<\/p>\n

and recently completed an administrative fellowship with the Native American<\/p>\n

Program at Harvard University.<\/p>\n

As OSEMA director, Flechs said his unit will be responsible for serving<\/p>\n

a host of targeted populations equally, including racial and ethnic minorities,<\/p>\n

rural students and nontraditional students. The unit has established a<\/p>\n

five-point strategy to achieve its mission:<\/p>\n


– Designing and monitoring student recruitment strategies in collaboration<\/p>\n

with all UNMC educational programs.<\/p>\n


– Interacting with a wide array of campus, university, educational<\/p>\n

and community-based programs.<\/p>\n


– Maintaining a highly visible and mobile operation.<\/p>\n


– Providing proactive advocacy and serving as a resource for its constituencies.<\/p>\n


– Working in harmony with all individuals and groups who desire true<\/p>\n

equity for all.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education and patient care, UNMC has<\/p>\n
