1999 Alumni Fellow at Penn State Medical Center<\/FONT><\/B><\/p>\n

Howard E. Gendelman, M.D., an internationally recognized neuroscientist<\/p>\n

at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, has been selected the 1999<\/p>\n

Alumni Fellow by Pennsylvania State University, Milton S. Hershey Medical<\/p>\n

Center. The Alumni Fellow is the highest award bestowed by Penn State to<\/p>\n

recognize outstanding scholarly and teaching contributions made by Penn<\/p>\n

State graduates.<\/p>\n

Dr. Gendelman, the David T. Purtilo Distinguished Professor of Pathology<\/p>\n

and Microbiology and professor in the internal medicine department, earned<\/p>\n

his medical degree from the Hershey Medical Center in 1979. He completed<\/p>\n

his residency in internal medicine at Montefiore Hospital Center, Albert<\/p>\n

Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, N.Y. Dr. Gendelman joined UNMC in<\/p>\n

1993 and is  currently  director of  UNMC’s primary neurosciences<\/p>\n

initiative — the Center for Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Diseases.<\/p>\n

A distinguished scholar known for his research in dementia and other<\/p>\n

neurodegenerative disorders of the brain, Dr. Gendelman has authored more<\/p>\n

than 155 peer-reviewed publications and edited two textbooks on the immunology<\/p>\n

and neurodegeneration of AIDS. Among his many honors, Dr. Gendleman received<\/p>\n

an outstanding teaching award as well as a major research award from Albert<\/p>\n

Einstein College of Medicine.<\/p>\n


 <\/p>\n


The Alumni Fellow Award, established in 1973,  recognizes several<\/p>\n

of  Penn State’s most prominent alumni each year. Dr. Gendelman will<\/p>\n

return to the Penn State campus in October and deliver the keynote address<\/p>\n

at the Penn State College of Medicine Convocation and Awards ceremony.<\/p>\n

As a Penn State Alumni Fellow, he will receive a medallion in recognition<\/p>\n

of his many accomplishments.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to<\/p>\n


research, education and patient care, UNMC has established itself as<\/p>\n

one of the country’s leading centers<\/p>\n


for cancer research and treatment and solid organ transplantation.<\/p>\n

More than $34 million in research grants and contracts are awarded to UNMC<\/p>\n

scientists annually. In addition, UNMC’s educational programs are responsible<\/p>\n

for training more health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any<\/p>\n

other institution.<\/p>\n
