\nBruce
\nGordon, M.D., associate
\nprofessor of pediatrics and co-chairman of the Institutional Review
\nBoard (IRB)
\nat the University of Nebraska Medical Center, has been named chairman
\nof the
\nnewly constituted Pediatric Central Institutional Review Board
\n(PedCIRB). The
\nNational Cancer Institute (NCI) made the announcement recently. <\/p>\n

\n “This is a
\nwonderful honor
\nand yet another recognition that UNMC is on the cutting-edge of
\nresearch ethics
\nand human research subject protection,” Dr. Gordon said. <\/p>\n

The 17-member PedCIRB is an
\nexpansion of the NCI Central IRB (CIRB) Initiative for the central
\nreview of
\nNCI-sponsored Cooperative Group protocols. The CIRB Initiative, which
\nwas
\ndeveloped by NCI in consultation with the Department of Health and
\nHuman
\nServices Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP), provides an
\ninnovative
\napproach to human subject protection through a “facilitated review”
\nprocess that can streamline local IRB reviews of national multi-center
\ncancer
\ntreatment trials and can reduce the administrative burden on local IRBs
\nand
\nclinical investigators. <\/p>\n

\n This is the
\nfirst centralized
\nIRB for pediatric cancer, Dr. Gordon said. After initial meetings, the
\ngroup
\nlikely will meet twice a month electronically. “We have the benefit of
\nthe
\nadult CIRB in knowing what works and what doesn’t, so that will be
\nhelpful in
\ndeveloping standard operating procedures for review of pediatric
\nstudies.” <\/p>\n

\n With the
\nestablishment of the
\nPedCIRB, these objectives are now being extended to children with
\ncancer who
\nparticipate in NCI-sponsored clinical trials conducted by the
\nChildren’s
\nOncology Group (COG). <\/s><\/p>\n

\n PedCIRB board
\nmembers have a
\ngreat deal of experience in the review of pediatric clinical trials,
\nespecially
\nthe special considerations that must be made for the evaluation of
\nresearch
\ninvolving children.<\/p>\n

\n “The IRB is such
\nan integral
\npart of any large research institution and certainly having somebody
\nwho is among
\nthe national leaders in the mechanical workings of the IRB will only
\nenhance
\nour research efforts on campus,” said Rubens Pamies, M.D., vice
\nchancellor for
\nacademic affairs. “By being on the front line, Dr. Gordon will be able
\nto
\nprovide educational opportunities to our researchers and keep us as
\nup-to-date
\nas possible on the direction of the IRB. That will be helpful to all of
\nus.”<\/p>\n

\n Dr. Gordon, a
\npediatric
\nhematologist-oncologist, joined UNMC in July 1989. He became a member
\nof the
\nIRB in 1992 and has served as its chairman for seven years. He is a
\nmember of
\nthe Public Policy Committee of the Applied Research Ethics National
\nAssociation
\n(the organization of IRB professionals), an editor of the Collaborative
\nIRB
\nTraining Initiative (CITI) Editorial Working Group and author of two
\nmodules
\nfor the course. He has served as clinical director of the Pediatric
\nBone Marrow
\nTransplantation Program at UNMC. Dr. Gordon received his undergraduate
\nand
\nmedical degrees from The Johns Hopkins University in
\nBaltimore, Md.\n<\/p>\n

\n Beginning in
\nNovember, the
\nPedCIRB will review all new NCI-approved COG pilot, phase 2 and phase 3
\nclinical trials prior to their activation and availability for patient
\nentry.
\nThe PedCIRB members provide broad clinical, scientific and ethical
\nexpertise for
\nthe review of COG treatment protocols. The board consists of 10 physicians, two nurses, one
\nbioethicist, four patient advocates, one pharmacist, and one
\nstatistician.<\/p>\n

\n Dr. Gordon is
\nthe third UNMC
\nfaculty member to serve on a national IRB position. In 2003, Ernest
\nPrentice,
\nPh.D., associate dean for research and associate vice chancellor for
\nacademic
\naffairs, was appointed chairman of the Department of Health and Human
\nServices
\nSecretary’s Advisory Committee on Human Research Protection. In 1994,
\nLois Norris,
\na community representative on the UNMC IRB, was appointed to President
