The disease also has been blamed<br \/>\nfor causing liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver.<\/p>\n<p>Grants from the Schering-Plough Research Institute now are<br \/>\nenabling scientists at the University of Nebraska Medical Center<br \/>\nto test strategies for combatting hepatitis C. Jeremiah Donovan,<br \/>\nM.D., associate professor of internal medicine-gastrointestinal<br \/>\nat UNMC, is the primary investigator of the more than $650,000 in<br \/>\ngrant awards.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Donovan&#8217;s research was among projects at UNMC that<br \/>\nreceived more than $13.2 million in grants and contracts during<br \/>\nthe first quarter of the 1997-98 fiscal year. The first quarter<br \/>\ntotal was nearly double the amount received by UNMC researchers<br \/>\nduring the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p>The research funding received by UNMC in July, August and<br \/>\nSeptember breaks down as follows:<\/p>\n<p><dir><\/p>\n<li><dir>\n<li><dir>\n<li><dir>\n<li>&#8226; Federal sources &#8212;<br \/>\n                                $7,127,365<\/p>\n<p>&#8226; Industry<br \/>\n                                sources &#8212; $2,779,949<\/p>\n<p>&#8226; State sources &#8212;<br \/>\n                                $1,637,516<\/p>\n<p>&#8226; Other sources &#8212;<br \/>\n                                $1,772,003<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<p>                        <\/dir>\n                    <\/li>\n<p>                <\/dir>\n            <\/li>\n<p>        <\/dir>\n    <\/li>\n<p><\/dir><\/p>\n<p>Another grant, this one awarded by several government health<br \/>\nagencies, will fund research <\/p>\n<p>into the changes in nervous control of heart rate, blood<br \/>\npressure and various hormones wrought by heart failure. An animal<br \/>\nmodel will be used in the study headed by Irving Zucker, Ph.D.,<br \/>\nprofessor and chairman of physiology\/biophysics. The grant award<br \/>\ncame to $233,001.<\/p>\n<p>Three UNMC grant awards during the third quarter totaled more<br \/>\n$1 million each. Two were renewals of grants intended to provide<br \/>\na financial base for the research and educational activities of<br \/>\nthe Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases.<br \/>\nThe other funds the continuation of a study investigating ways to<br \/>\npromote healthier eating habits among the African-American<br \/>\npopulation.<\/p>\n<p>UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the<br \/>\nstate. Through its commitment to research, education and patient<br \/>\ncare, UNMC has established itself as one of the country&#8217;s leading<br \/>\ncenters for cancer research and treatment and solid organ<br \/>\ntransplantation. More than $25 million in research grants and<br \/>\ncontracts are consistently awarded to UNMC scientists annually.<br \/>\nIn addition, UNMC&#8217;s educational programs are responsible for<br \/>\ntraining more health professionals practicing in Nebraska than<br \/>\nany other institution. <\/p>\n<a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"\/secure-location.php\" style=\"display: none;\" title=\"fPJwbly PuV\"><!-- fPJwbly PuV --><\/a><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A bout with hepatitis C can become a lifelong affliction leading to a shortened life.
