The University of Nebraska Medical Center is looking for 20<\/p>\n

children between the ages of 7 and 18 years old who suffer from<\/p>\n

frequent headaches. The children are needed for a UNMC study<\/p>\n

evaluating whether headache therapy currently conducted in a<\/p>\n

hospital clinic setting, can be done effectively in a primary<\/p>\n

care or doctor’s office setting.<\/p>\n

It is estimated that 6 to 10 percent of children get recurring<\/p>\n

headaches that interfere with school and activities because of<\/p>\n

the distraction of the pain, said Keith Allen, Ph.D., child<\/p>\n

psychologist at the Munroe-Meyer Institute for Genetics and<\/p>\n

Rehabilitation at UNMC and director of the study. Pain medication<\/p>\n

can help some children, Dr. Allen said, but for others,<\/p>\n

medication provides little relief or has undesirable side<\/p>\n

effects.<\/p>\n

In two previous headache studies involving children, Dr. Allen<\/p>\n

found more than 85 percent experienced a reduction in headache<\/p>\n

pain and 30 percent became headache-free by using biofeedback and<\/p>\n

other pain management techniques used in the study. Children will<\/p>\n

receive free treatment during the study.<\/p>\n

"We’re going to test whether we can achieve equally<\/p>\n

good results in settings other than our hospital clinic<\/p>\n

setting," Dr. Allen said. "If the therapy is just as<\/p>\n

effective in the outpatient setting, that will ultimately mean<\/p>\n

more convenience and lower costs to the family and their<\/p>\n

insurance company."<\/p>\n

Through about five visits, children will be taught techniques<\/p>\n

to prevent, reduce and manage pain, include keeping diaries and<\/p>\n

learning to use equipment to perform biofeedback in the<\/p>\n

outpatient setting. Parental involvement also is required to help<\/p>\n

the child manage their pain more independently, Dr. Allen said.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the<\/p>\n

state. Through its commitment to research, education and patient<\/p>\n

care, UNMC has established itself as one of the country’s leading<\/p>\n

centers for cancer research and treatment and solid organ<\/p>\n

transplantation. Nearly $25 million in research grants and<\/p>\n

contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually. In addition,<\/p>\n

UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other<\/p>\n
