Fifty eighth-grade students from 16 schools across Nebraska attended<\/p>\n

UNMC’s ninth annual Health\/Science Meet June 7-9 for an educational and<\/p>\n

fun experience. The meets goal is to inspire students, especially those<\/p>\n

from rural communities, to pursue careers in health care.<\/p>\n

The students qualified for the meet by submitting science projects in<\/p>\n

regional science competitions.<\/p>\n

The expense-paid meet exposes students to the health professions, medical<\/p>\n

research and patient care. Events include hands-on activities, speakers<\/p>\n

presenting information about a variety of health science disciplines and<\/p>\n

touring UNMC. Other activities included fun activities at Mahoney State<\/p>\n

Park, as well as a melodrama and the Health\/Science Bowl, a team competition<\/p>\n

held in a TV game show style.<\/p>\n

UNMC, an academic health science center, is recognized nationally and<\/p>\n

internationally for its bone marrow and liver transplant programs, rural<\/p>\n

health care initiatives, biotechnology, geriatrics and cancer research<\/p>\n

and treatment. UNMC promotes programs which enable Nebraska to “grow its<\/p>\n

own” health care professionals.  More than half of Nebraska physicians,<\/p>\n

pharmacists, dental professionals, nurses and other health professionals<\/p>\n

have graduated from UNMC.<\/p>\n

Students in eighth-grade next year interested in applying to attend<\/p>\n

the year 2001 Health\/Science Meet should contact their science teacher,<\/p>\n

school counselor or principal in the fall. Information and applications<\/p>\n

for next year’s event will be sent to school officials during November.<\/p>\n
