The University of Nebraska Medical Center will hold regional science competitions at schools across the state for students competing to attend the sixth annual Health\/Science Meet. At the regional competitions, students will present either a five-page science essay or a display dealing with a specific scientific field with the top presenters qualifying to attend UNMC’s 1998 Health\/Science Meet June 11-13 on the UNMC campus in Omaha.<\/P>
\n

Students participating at the regionals must have already applied to participate in regional competitions.<\/P>
\n

The goal of the Health\/Science Meet is to provide students a fun and educational experience that will inspire them to pursue a career in the health sciences, said Roxanna Jokela, chair of the Health\/Science Meet. The meet will provide students with the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities in education, research and patient care.<\/P>
\n

Students with the best 100 science projects from the regionals around the state will qualify for the Health\/Science Meet. Winners will receive free meals, lodging and entertainment while in Omaha.<\/P>
\n

As Nebraska’s primary center for training health professionals, UNMC has been involved in several programs which enable Nebraska to “grow its own” health care professionals. More than 50 percent of Nebraska physicians, pharmacists, dentists, nurses and other health professionals have graduated from UNMC.<\/P>
