The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing held induction<\/p>\n

ceremonies across the state Feb. 22 to recognize 126 new nursing students<\/p>\n

as they commit to academic integrity and begin assimilating the values<\/p>\n

and behaviors of the professional nurse. The ceremony also reiterated some<\/p>\n

of the most important values for the professional nurse and for the profession<\/p>\n

of nursing: responsibility, trustworthiness, honesty, fairness, and respect<\/p>\n

of others.<\/p>\n

Ceremonies were held in Omaha, Scottsbluff, Kearney, and Lincoln.<\/p>\n

During the ceremony, students recited an oath of professionalism and<\/p>\n

signed a pledge. They also received the colleges badge to be affixed to<\/p>\n

their uniforms, as well as be given the pen used to sign the oath.<\/p>\n

Public trust is an essential ingredient of effective health care,<\/p>\n

said Virginia Tilden, D.N.Sc., dean of the UNMC College of Nursing. Surveys<\/p>\n

indicate the American public ranks nursing as one of the most trusted of<\/p>\n

professions. The oath of professionalism taken by these beginning nursing<\/p>\n

students reminds them of the importance of professionalism, that is, responsibility,<\/p>\n

honesty, fairness, and respect for all patients. At the induction ceremonies,<\/p>\n

families and friends are asked to help students fulfill the pledge they<\/p>\n

have taken to uphold clinical and academic integrity and the highest professional<\/p>\n

standards, Dr. Tilden said.<\/p>\n
