The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing Kearney<\/p>\n

Division invites anyone interested in pursuing a degree in nursing or learning<\/p>\n

more about the field of nursing to attend an open house on Saturday, Nov.<\/p>\n

3, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event will be held in the colleges newly renovated<\/p>\n

West Center building, 1917 W. 24th St., on the University of Nebraska at<\/p>\n

Kearney campus.<\/p>\n

Faculty, staff and students will be available to talk about UNMCs bachelors,<\/p>\n

masters and doctoral nursing programs. Attendees will have the opportunity<\/p>\n

to talk to a variety of nursing specialists about their roles, such as<\/p>\n

nurse practitioners, certified nurse anesthetists, flight and emergency<\/p>\n

room nurses, critical care nurses, and a labor and delivery nurse.<\/p>\n

Its a wonderful time to be entering the nursing profession, said<\/p>\n

Judy Billings, Ph.D., assistant dean of nursing, UNMC College of Nursing<\/p>\n

Kearney Division. There are many opportunities available. Nursing is a<\/p>\n

way to make a considerable impact on peoples lives. Its satisfying in<\/p>\n

knowing youve helped someone through the struggle of a critical illness<\/p>\n

or in the most wonderful times.<\/p>\n

She said there are many benefits in a nursing career including job flexibility,<\/p>\n

good pay, bonuses and loan repayment, job security and a personal sense<\/p>\n

of fulfillment in a career choice.<\/p>\n

Non-nursing courses taken to pursue a bachelor’s degree can be earned<\/p>\n

at any accredited colleges and will apply toward a degree through UNMC.<\/p>\n

Registered nurses don’t need a bachelor’s degree to enroll in the program<\/p>\n

for registered nurses seeking a masters degree in nursing. Some of UNMC’s<\/p>\n

nursing courses are accessible through the Internet, which offers students<\/p>\n

the flexibility of learning at home according to their schedule.<\/p>\n

There are more nursing opportunities than can be filled in the Kearney<\/p>\n

area, Dr. Billings said. Were in the midst of a nursing shortage that<\/p>\n

is forecasted to last at least through 2010. Hospitals and health care<\/p>\n

facilities are clamoring for nurses.<\/p>\n

Refreshments will be served. Parking is available to the west and north<\/p>\n

of the West Center building.<\/p>\n

The UNMC College of Nursing, the largest nursing school in the state,<\/p>\n

has about 700 students at its Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney and Scottsbluff campuses.<\/p>\n

It is the only nursing school in the state to offer undergraduate, master’s<\/p>\n

and doctoral degrees. The Kearney Division, established in 1977, has graduated<\/p>\n

more than 600 students, more than half of whom practice nursing in a 100-mile<\/p>\n

radius of Kearney.<\/p>\n
