Anne Kessinger, M.D., professor and chief of<\/p>\n

oncology\/hematology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center,<\/p>\n

has been elected president of the American Association for Cancer<\/p>\n

Education. She will serve a one-year term<\/p>\n

The association has about 400 members and is open to anyone<\/p>\n

engaged in any aspect of cancer education. The association is<\/p>\n

focused on inspiring cancer education by professionals whose<\/p>\n

duties include cancer education or training within academic<\/p>\n

health-care institutions, or other organizations possessing<\/p>\n

formal cancer training and teaching programs. The association<\/p>\n

also provides a forum for health-care professionals concerned<\/p>\n

with the study and improvement of cancer education at the<\/p>\n

undergraduate, graduate, continuing professional and<\/p>\n

paraprofessional levels.<\/p>\n

Dr. Kessinger has been a faculty member at UNMC since 1972.<\/p>\n

She was named professor in 1990 and section chief in 1991. In<\/p>\n

1984, the nation’s first peripheral stem cell transplant was<\/p>\n

started at UNMC — largely as a result of Dr. Kessinger’s<\/p>\n

research.<\/p>\n

Dr. Kessinger, who lives in Scribner, was honored for her<\/p>\n

efforts to advance cancer research and education with the 1997<\/p>\n

Outstanding Research and Creative Activity Award, which<\/p>\n

recognizes University of Nebraska scientists whose research and<\/p>\n

creative activities merit national and international acclaim. The<\/p>\n

award honored Dr. Kessinger’s pioneering work in peripheral<\/p>\n

stem cell transplantation.<\/p>\n

An internationally recognized leader in the field, Dr.<\/p>\n

Kessinger has written or been a contributing author on nearly 500<\/p>\n

abstracts and articles for scientific<\/p>\n

journals or medical textbook chapters, and has been an invited<\/p>\n

lecturer at more than 80 conferences and seminars. In addition to<\/p>\n

her research with stem cells, Dr. Kessinger has been published<\/p>\n

extensively on therapeutic approaches for lung cancer and other<\/p>\n

solid tumors.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the<\/p>\n

state. Through its commitment to research, education and patient<\/p>\n

care, UNMC has established itself as one of the country’s leading<\/p>\n

centers for cancer research and treatment and solid organ<\/p>\n

transplantation. More than $25 million in research grants and<\/p>\n

contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually. In addition,<\/p>\n

UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other<\/p>\n
