Kristie Hayes, M.D., assistant professor and chief of the dermatology<\/p>\n

section for internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Nebraska<\/p>\n

Medical Center, has been named assistant dean for students and multicultural<\/p>\n

affairs in the College of Medicine.<\/p>\n

Dr. Hayes, a 1989 graduate of UNMC, will assist with admissions and<\/p>\n

student counseling, as well as develop new programs and recruit students<\/p>\n

of color.<\/p>\n

“I was thrilled to learn of the appointment,” said the St. Louis, Mo.,<\/p>\n

native. “As a new face in the office of admissions and student affairs,<\/p>\n

I want to be an additional resource to all students.”<\/p>\n

Her new responsibilities, which she assumed March 1, reflect many of<\/p>\n

the tasks she already was participating in across campus. Dr. Hayes has<\/p>\n

served on the College of Medicine’s admissions committee for eight years<\/p>\n

and has been involved with mentoring students since her days as a medical<\/p>\n

student.<\/p>\n

“As a graduate of the College of Medicine, I hope my experiences as<\/p>\n

a student, resident, faculty and section chief can be of help to students<\/p>\n

in their careers,” she said.<\/p>\n

Since joining the UNMC faculty in 1994, Dr. Hayes has consistently been<\/p>\n

named one of the top teachers in the department of internal medicine. She<\/p>\n

is a member of various professional societies, including a Fellow Member<\/p>\n

in the American Academy of Dermatology and the Association of Professors<\/p>\n

of Dermatology. She also serves as president of the local chapter of the<\/p>\n

National Medical Association.<\/p>\n

Dr. Hayes also is active in the community, serving as medical advisor<\/p>\n

for the Alopecia Areata Foundation in the Omaha-Lincoln area and a member<\/p>\n

of the Project Banneker Governance Board of the Omaha Public Schools. She<\/p>\n

also serves on the advisory committee of Banneker 2000: Community Excellence<\/p>\n

in Math and Science, an urban systemic program.<\/p>\n

“I’m always willing to meet with students for career advising and development,<\/p>\n

recruiting and retention issues, residency selection, or to help them match<\/p>\n

their talents to a career specialty,” she said.<\/p>\n

Dr. Hayes also hopes to identify students with academic potential in<\/p>\n

Nebraska’s high schools and provide them with greater exposure to the field<\/p>\n
