Kuhl Testamentary Trust, the University of Nebraska<\/p>\n<p>Foundation recently received a $170,000 bequest to support medical research<\/p>\n<p>at UNMC. Kuhl initially established the trust to care for his brother who<\/p>\n<p>suffered from pulmonary disease and then to support research in cancer<\/p>\n<p>and pulmonary medicine upon his death, said Roger Benjamin, a trustee for<\/p>\n<p>the Kuhl Trust. I believe Robert Kuhl would be proud of the work that<\/p>\n<p>will continue as a result of his diligence and generosity, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Through medical research, UNMC is able to determine better means of<\/p>\n<p>detecting, treating and possibly eliminating many diseases that affect<\/p>\n<p>individuals in Nebraska and around the world, said UNMCs Vice Chancellor<\/p>\n<p>for Research Thomas Rosenquist, Ph.D. The generosity of Mr. Kuhl in directing<\/p>\n<p>his gift to medical research will help us advance promising efforts in<\/p>\n<p>two critical areas, Dr. Rosenquist said.<\/p>\n<p>In Nebraska, cancer ranks as the second leading cause of death with<\/p>\n<p>one in every five deaths related to the disease. UNMCs physicians and<\/p>\n<p>researchers are committed to eradicating a disease that claims the lives<\/p>\n<p>of more than 500,000 people in the United States each year, said Kenneth<\/p>\n<p>Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center.<\/p>\n<p>We are devoted to developing new cancer treatments and prevention and<\/p>\n<p>helping our patients recover their lives, Dr. Cowan said. Doing so requires<\/p>\n<p>an investment in the work taking place in both clinical and laboratory<\/p>\n<p>settings. Were grateful for Mr. Kuhls foresight in helping us unravel<\/p>\n<p>the mysteries of cancer and thus save lives.<\/p>\n<p>Equally concerning for Nebraskans is the states asthma mortality which<\/p>\n<p>ranked second highest in the nation between 1990-1995, according to a 1998<\/p>\n<p>Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report and the latest data available.<\/p>\n<p>With the states asthma mortality rate higher than the national rate, the<\/p>\n<p>Kuhl estate gift will help UNMCs section of pulmonary, critical care and<\/p>\n<p>sleep medicine advance its important work.<\/p>\n<p>Each day we are working to find better ways to diagnose and treat diseases<\/p>\n<p>of the lungs and respiratory system, said Joe Sisson, M.D., chief of UNMCs<\/p>\n<p>section of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine.
