Greeted by the gentle sounds of a trickling waterfall against soft music,<\/p>\n

visitors to the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s new Lifestyle Enhancement<\/p>\n

Center leave their troubles at the door.<\/p>\n

Unlike most medical environments, the patient lobby has a soothing atmosphere,<\/p>\n

which is carried throughout the 7,500 square-foot center.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, June 23, the public is invited to celebrate the center’s<\/p>\n

grand opening from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2255 S. 132nd St. and Montclair<\/p>\n

Drive, Suite B. (adjacent to the west end of the Prairie Life Center Building).<\/p>\n

A variety of activities and services will be offered free to the public<\/p>\n

during the day’s festivities.<\/p>\n

“This is a unique center to Omaha,” said David Bouda, M.D., director<\/p>\n

of the complementary alternative program at UNMC. “We offer a holistic<\/p>\n

approach to health care by providing customized programs that help you<\/p>\n

map your way to a healthier and more peaceful life.”<\/p>\n

An extension of UNMC’s Complementary Alternative Medicine Program, the<\/p>\n

center focuses on education, research and service. The center’s licensed<\/p>\n

staff is dedicated to enhancing people’s health by optimizing their success<\/p>\n

with conventional medical treatments, by relieving pain and disease, by<\/p>\n

managing stress and by minimizing the effects of the aging process.<\/p>\n

A variety of activities are planned during the open house including<\/p>\n

tours of the Lifestyle Enhancement Center; free bone density screenings<\/p>\n

and Dermaview facial analysis on a first come, first served basis; a health<\/p>\n

and wellness book fair, and an opportunity to meet the Lifestyle Enhancement<\/p>\n

Center staff and win free services and products.<\/p>\n

Other activities are:<\/p>\n

· 8 to 8:30 a.m. — Is There Enough Selenium in my Carrot? (and<\/p>\n

other Questions) — Kimberly Haigney, clinical dietician at Nebraska Healthy<\/p>\n

System and Teri Gabel, Pharm.D., a specialist in herbal remedies, will<\/p>\n

discuss phytonutrients, their importance and best sources.<\/p>\n

· 9 to 9:30 a.m. — Stress Management Strategies: Using Biofeedback<\/p>\n

— Registered nurse Mary Glassman will discuss and demonstrate this effective<\/p>\n

method of treatment.<\/p>\n

· 10 to 10:30 a.m. — Put Some Muscle in Your Golf Game — Bill<\/p>\n

Bruening, chiropractor for the NCAA College World Series, will discuss<\/p>\n

the muscles most involved in swinging a golf club, how to keep them healthy<\/p>\n

and what to do in case of strain.<\/p>\n

· 11 to 11:30 a.m. — Healthy Bones: Factors That Make a Difference<\/p>\n

— William Palmer, M.D., a rheumatology specialist with Westroads Medical<\/p>\n

Group, will present information on diet, exercise and supplementation practices<\/p>\n

that build healthy bones.<\/p>\n

· Noon to 12:30 p.m. — No Pain, No Gain and Other Myths About<\/p>\n

Exercise — Patty Iske, a certified personal trainer, and Cindy Cook, a<\/p>\n

certified in personal training as well as several Eastern modalities, will<\/p>\n

discuss and demonstrate gentle and effective ways to stay in shape.<\/p>\n

The center offers a variety of services including physician consultation,<\/p>\n

physician care management, therapeutic massage, REIKI, craniosacral therapy,<\/p>\n

therapeutic touch, heated stone massage, nutritional consultation, herbal<\/p>\n

consultation, biofeedback, education, counseling, coaching for executives,<\/p>\n

strength and flexibility consultation, stress management and weekend retreats.<\/p>\n
