<\/FONT><\/B><\/p>\n

 Director of one of the nations largest and most preeminent breast<\/p>\n

cancer research programs, Marc E. Lippman, M.D., will speak at the University<\/p>\n

of Nebraska Medical Center on Thursday, Oct. 8. Molecular Therapies for<\/p>\n

Breast Cancer, is part of the Henry Lemon, M.D., Memorial Lectureship<\/p>\n

in Breast Cancer.<\/p>\n

 The 4 p.m. lecture is open to the public and will be held in the<\/p>\n

Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. The lecture series was established to<\/p>\n

honor the late Dr. Lemon who was the first director of the Eppley Institute<\/p>\n

for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases.<\/p>\n

 Dr. Lemon, who was considered the first oncologist in Nebraska,<\/p>\n

attended the University of Chicago and graduated cum laude from the Harvard<\/p>\n

Medical School in Boston, Mass., in 1940. After working 15 years at Boston<\/p>\n

University, he joined UNMC as director of the Eppley Institute.<\/p>\n

 Dr. Lemon was instrumental in establishing UNMC as a major cancer<\/p>\n

research and treatment center. He warned of the cancer-causing effects<\/p>\n

of cigarette smoking in the mid 60s, developed better methods of administering<\/p>\n

chemotherapy and contributed to a program that improved the teaching of<\/p>\n

cancer in medical schools.<\/p>\n

 Dr. Lippman is director of the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown<\/p>\n

University in Washington, D.C., and of the Lombardi Cancer Centers Breast<\/p>\n

Cancer Program, and is nationally recognized for his cancer research.<\/p>\n

 After graduating from Yale Medical School in New Haven, Conn.,<\/p>\n

in 1968, Dr. Lippman served in various positions at Johns Hopkins University<\/p>\n

in Bethesda, Md., and the National Cancer Institute before joining Georgetown<\/p>\n

in 1988. He has authored 25 books, nearly 400 peer-reviewed journal publications,<\/p>\n

and nearly 200 book chapters. In addition, Dr. Lippman serves on many national<\/p>\n

and international editorial boards and committees including the board of<\/p>\n

directors for the National Coalition for Cancer Research.<\/p>\n

 The UNMC Eppley Cancer Center is one of more than 50 National<\/p>\n

Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers. Of the $27.2 million in research<\/p>\n

grants awarded to UNMC in 1996-1997, Cancer Center researchers generated<\/p>\n

more than $8 million.<\/p>\n

UNMC is the only public academic health science center in the state.<\/p>\n

Through its commitment to research, education and patient care, UNMC has<\/p>\n

established itself as one of the country’s leading centers for cancer research<\/p>\n

and treatment and solid organ transplantation. More than $34 million in<\/p>\n

research grants and contracts are awarded to UNMC scientists annually.<\/p>\n

In addition, UNMC’s educational programs are responsible for training more<\/p>\n

health professionals practicing in Nebraska than any other institution.<\/p>\n
